1. Aspects of Hadron Production in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Physics
Abstract : High-energy heavy-ion collisions provide a unique tool for the study of nuclear matter as a function of temperature and density. WA98 at the CERN SPS recorded data with a 158 A GeV Pb beam on a Pb target in 1996. To cope with the high charged-particle density, a tracking system based on high granularity multi-step avalanche detectors was developed. READ MORE

2. Presence Design : Mediated Spaces Extending Architecture
Abstract : This thesis is a contribution to design-led research and addresses a readership in the fields of architecture as well as in media and communications. In juxtaposing the tools of the designer (e.g. READ MORE

3. Sick of smells : Empirical findings and a theoretical framework for chemical intolerance
Abstract : Chemical intolerance (CI) is a term that refers to the surprisingly common phenomenon of persons getting ill from everyday chemicals. Although seemingly similar to asthma and allergies, CI sufferers do not react to exposures with increased histamine release. READ MORE

4. Laser Doppler Perfusion Monitoring and Imaging especially as regards testing for sympathetic nerve function
Abstract : The operating principle of all laser Doppler methods is based on the fact that incident photons shift in wavelength when interacting with moving blood cells passing through the microvascular network. After photodetection and further signal processing, the recorded parameter can be considered an arbitrary measure of tissue blood flow, and this is referred to as ?perfusion?. READ MORE

5. Biological determinants of HIV infection : studies of viral evolution during disease progression in children and adults
Abstract : Coreceptor usage of primary HIV-1 isolates was analysed in relation to their biological phenotype and the severity of HIV-1 infection in the patient. The indicator cell lines, U87 glioma cells engineered to express CD4 and one of the chemokine receptors CCR1, CCR2b, CCR3, CCR5 or CXCR4, were infected with a panel of well-characterized primary HIV-1 isolates.
