1. Cohesive and Spectroscopic properties of the Lanthanides within the Hubbard I Approximation
Abstract : We describe the rare-earth elements using the Hubbard I approximation. We show that the theory reproduces the cohesive properties, like the volume and bulk modulus, and we find an excellent agreement between theory and experiment for the (inverse) photo emission spectra of the valence band. 3. Mechanical behaviour of adhesive layers : experimental methods, cohesive laws, and fracture mechanics
Abstract : Adhesive joining is today viewed as one of the key technologies to achieve decreased emissions in the automobile industry. To decrease weight, optimal material selection often results in different materials for different parts. This leads to the necessity to join mixed material. Here, the use of adhesives is the most promising joining technology. READ MORE

4. Influences of temperature, fatigue and mixed mode loading on the cohesive properties of adhesive layers
Abstract : This thesis concerns some aspects that have influence on the strength of adhesive layers. The strength is determined by the stress deformation-relation of the layer. This relation is also referred to as cohesive law. READ MORE

5. Building crystals out of crystals : Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles and self-assembled mesocrystals
Abstract : This thesis is focused on the fabrication and characterization of self-assembled arrays of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe1-xO) nanoparticles. The synthesis of spherical and cubic iron oxide nanocrystals, with sizes between 5 and 30 nm and narrow size distributions, is demonstrated, along with a rigorous morphological characterization of the cubic nanoparticles.
