  1. 1. Perturbance and Stimulation : using Nitrogen Addition and High-Throughput Sequencing to Study Fungal Communities in Boreal Forests

    Author : Andreas N. Schneider; Nathaniel Street; Vaughan Hurry; Torgny Näsholm; Colin Averill; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boreal forest; Scots pine; Norway spruce; ectomycorrhiza; saprotroph; fertilization; nitrogen; mycobiome; rhizosphere; decomposition; carbon; seedling establishment; forest management; clearcutting;

    Abstract : Fungal communities are major players in globally important nutrient cycling processes, and form symbioses with most terrestrial plants. In the nitrogen (N) limited Swedish boreal forest, ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi colonize most roots of the economically important and stand dominating conifer species, Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), with significant implications for tree nutrition and decomposition processes. 2. 2. Cardiovascular and respiratory effects of apnea in humans

    Author : Johan Andersson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lung volume; breath-hold diving; Apnea; breath-holding; face immersion; cold stimulation; diving response; diving reflex; circulation; bradycardia; vasoconstriction; arterial blood pressure; cardiac output; spleen; respiration; splenic contraction; alveol; Physiology; Fysiologi; Respiratory system; Andningsorganen; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with cardiovascular and respiratory effects of apneas in humans. During apnea (breath-holding), a number of interacting cardiovascular reflexes are initiated, and together these reflexes are called the “diving response”. READ MORE

  3. 3. Dietary, Pharmacological and Environmental Effects on Brown Adipose Tissue

    Author : Erik Lindsund; Tore Bengtsson; Jan Nedergaard; Karsten Kristiansen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Obesity; brown adipose tissue; uncoupling protein 1; moderate cold exposure; calorimetry; thyroxine; dietary protein; thermic effect of food; diet-induced thermogenesis; adrenergic stimulation; mice; physiology; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Obesity is a common health issue; over 12 % of the adult world population have obesity. Obesity has many co-morbidities including cardo-vascular diseases and diabetes. Obesity is the result of chronic positive energy balance, eating too much and expending too little. READ MORE

  4. 4. β-adrenergic stimulation of VEGF gene expression : intracellular signalling pathways

    Author : Magnus J. Fredriksson; Georg Breier; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : In the present study, the intracellular signalling pathway mediating ß-adrenergic stimulation of the expression of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene was investigated.VEGF is an activator of angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, and is considered to be a major regulator of both physiologically and pathologically related angiogenesis, as well as being essential for development of the vascular system. 5. 5. Nerve injury induced pain and spinal cord stimulation

    Author : Camilla Ultenius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Neuropathic pain;

    Abstract : Chronic neuropathic pain caused by injury to or disease in the nervous system is relatively common and results in major suffering, poor quality of life and incapacity. Such pain is a therapeutic challenge because a considerable portion of the patients fails to benefit from pharmacotherapy. READ MORE
