  1. 1. Physiological Stress Reactivity in Late Pregnancy

    Author : Charlotte Hellgren; Inger Sundström-Poromaa; Helena Åkerud; Mats Hammar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acoustic startle response; allopregnanolone; antenatal; anxiety; cold pressor test; cortisol; cortisol awakening response; depression; electrodermal; estradiol; hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis; postpartum; pregnancy; progesterone; skin conductance; stress; sympathetic nervous system; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : During pregnancy, the basal activity is increased in both of our major stress response systems: the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. At the same time, the reactivity towards stressors is reduced. These alterations sustain maternal and fetal homeostasis, and are involved in the regulation of gestational length. READ MORE

  2. 2. Unravelling the complexity of cold acclimation in plants

    Author : Aakash Chawade; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioinformatics; cold acclimation; winter; oat; arabidopsis; stress; freezing; genetic networks; metabolomics;

    Abstract : Many plants respond to low non-freezing temperatures by increasing their freezing tolerance in a process known as cold acclimation. Microarray studies have shown that hundreds of genes are differentially expressed during the cold acclimation process in Arabidopsis. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cold exposure and thermal comfort among patients in prehospital emergency care : innovation research in nursing

    Author : Jonas Aléx; Britt-Inger Saveman; Stig Karlsson; Ulf Björnstig; Inggard Lereim; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; thermal comfort; thermal discomfort; cold exposure; cold stress; hypothermia; patients’ experiences; active warming; prehospital emergency care; finger temperature; back temperature; omvårdnadsforskning med medicinsk inriktning; Caring Sciences;

    Abstract : BackgroundPatients’ cold exposure is a neglected problem in prehospital emergency care. Cold stress increases pain and anxiety and contributes to fear and an overall sense of dissatisfaction. When left untreated, cold stress disturbs vital body functions until ultimately reaches hypothermia. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cold exposure and health : A study on neurological and vascular hand symptoms in northern Sweden

    Author : Albin Stjernbrandt; Jens Wahlström; Ingrid Liljelind; Tohr Nilsson; Ellen Jørum; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cold climate; Sweden; Hand; Frostbite; Raynaud disease; Peripheral nerve injuries; Occupational and Environmental Medicine; arbets- och miljömedicin;

    Abstract : Background: Living in a cold climate is associated with several adverse health effects. The main purpose of this thesis was to describe cold exposure characteristics in northern Sweden, and investigate the associations between such exposure and the reporting of neurological and vascular hand symptoms. 5. 5. Evaluation of hand skin temperature : Infrared thermography in combination with cold stress tests

    Author : Katarina Leijon Sundqvist; Niklas Lehto; James Mercer; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cold provocation; rewarming; thermoregulation; dynamic IR thermography; Health Science; Hälsovetenskap;

    Abstract : AbstractSince ancient times, warm or cold skin on the human body has been used as a parameter in evaluating health. Changes in body temperature are attributed to diseases or disorders. The assessment of body temperature is often performed to measure fever by detecting an elevated core temperature. READ MORE
