1. Proteins of the Inter-α-inhibitor Family : Biosynthesis, Plasma Clearance and Interaction with Extracellular Matrix Components
Abstract : Bikunin, a chondroitin sulfate-containing protein of 25 kDa, has protease inhibitory activity and occurs in the plasma in free and complexed form. In inter-α-inhibitor (IαI) and pre-a-inhibitor (PαI) it is covalently linked through its chondroitin sulfate (CS) chain to two or one other polypeptide of about 80 kDa – heavy chains 1 and 2 (H1, H2) and heavy chain 3 (H3) – respectively. 2. The role of leucine-rich repeat glycoproteins/proteoglycans in the assembly of collagen matrices
Abstract : The properties of different connective tissues depend on the synthesis and assembly of macromolecular structures composed of collagen and other extracellular matrix components. Mechanisms modulating these events play important roles in the formation of a functional tissue. READ MORE

3. Chondrocyte-matrix interactions: with emphasis on the collagen binding integrin a10ß1
Abstract : The work in this thesis has been focused on chondrocyte integrins and their interaction with the matrix proteins chondroadherin (CHAD) and collagen type II (CII). Affinity purification of CHAD-binding proteins from chondrocyte lysate, followed by immunoprecipitation of EDTA-eluted material identified alpha2beta1 as a CHAD-binding integrin. READ MORE

4. Collagen VI - Molecular Assembly and Interactions
Abstract : The extracellular matrix plays an integral role in tissue remodeling and development and it defines the different mechanical properties of a variety of connective tissues. Its complexity in composition and the details in organization has only been partly elucidated. READ MORE

5. The MHC-glycopeptide-T cell interaction in collagen induced arthritis : a study using glycopeptides, isosteres and statistical molecular design in a mouse model for rheumatoid arthritis
Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease affecting approximately 1% of the population in the western world. It is characterised by a tissue specific attack of cartilage in peripheral joints. Collagen induced arthritis (CIA) is one of the most commonly used animal models for (RA), with similar symptoms and histopathology. READ MORE
