1. The role of leucine-rich repeat glycoproteins/proteoglycans in the assembly of collagen matrices
Abstract : The properties of different connective tissues depend on the synthesis and assembly of macromolecular structures composed of collagen and other extracellular matrix components. Mechanisms modulating these events play important roles in the formation of a functional tissue. READ MORE

2. Cartilage homeostasis: Modulation of cells and extracelllar matrix assembly
Abstract : The cartilage extracellular matrix consists of the collagen network which enmeshes the large aggregating proteoglycan, aggrecan. Accessory molecules regulate the formation and maintenance of these structures. This thesis studies aspects of cartilage assembly during development and its degradation in disease, focusing on the collagen network. READ MORE

3. Novel non-collagenous modulators of biomineralization in bone and dentin
Abstract : The formation of mineralized tissues such as bones and teeth is governed on many levels by molecular, genetic, and cellular events to culminate in terminally differentiated cells that secrete a specialized organic matrix, which is later mineralized through the coordinated deposition of calcium phosphate crystals. The formation of this hard tissue phase is tightly regulated by components of the extracellular matrix (ECM), since deviations from this equilibrium result in prevalent, debilitating health problems such as arthritis, vascular calcification, periodontal disease and osteoporosis.
