  1. 36. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects

    Author : Grethe Neumann Andersen; Solbritt Rantapää Dahlqvist; Lucia Mincheva-Nilsson; Sören Jacobsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic sclerosis; interstitial lung disease; MMP-9; Th1 Th2; transcription factors; NO; iNOS; E-selectin; endothelium-dependent dilation; endothelium-independent dilation.; Rheumatology; Reumatologi;

    Abstract : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 2. 37. HMBG1 as a proinflammatory mediator in arthritis

    Author : Riikka Kokkola; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Proinflammatory cytokines are central in the pathogenesis of chronic arthritis and a new generation of therapeutics blocking TNF or IL-1 has improved outcome for many patients with inflammatory joint diseases. This thesis addresses the role of HMGB1 (High Mobility Group Box Chromosomal protein 1) in inflammation and as a potential novel therapeutic target molecule in arthritis. READ MORE

  3. 38. Molecular mechanisms and complete antigen formation in allergic contact dermatitis

    Author : Stefan Ahlfors; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hypersensitivity; adduct; immune response.; Allergy; hapten;

    Abstract : Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common T cell mediated skin disease. Small reactive organic molecules called haptens induce ACD. Haptens are not recognized by themselves, but need to bond to endogenous proteins in the skin, and processed further into complete antigens. Antigen specific T cells then recognize the resulting antigen. READ MORE

  4. 39. Hyaluronan Derivatives and Injectable Gels for Tissue Engineering

    Author : Kristoffer Bergman; Tim Bowden; Jöns Hilborn; Jeffrey Hubbell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hyaluronan; Hydrogel; Tissue Engineering; Scaffold; Minimally invasive strategy; Bone morphogenetic protein; Hydroxyapatite; Bone; Cartilage; Tendon; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : The present work describes the preparation of hyaluronan derivatives and hydrogels with potential use in tissue engineering applications. A potentially injectable hydrogel consisting of hyaluronan and collagen was successfully used to grow neurons in vitro by encapsulation of neural stem and progenitor cells. READ MORE

  5. 40. T-cell specificity and regulation in atherosclerosis

    Author : Anton Gisterå; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in the world. The underlying cause in most cases is atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease. Subendothelial retention of lipoproteins triggers monocyte-derived macrophages and T-helper (Th) 1 cells to form lipid-laden atherosclerotic plaques in the artery wall. READ MORE
