36. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects
Abstract : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 37. HMBG1 as a proinflammatory mediator in arthritis
Abstract : Proinflammatory cytokines are central in the pathogenesis of chronic arthritis and a new generation of therapeutics blocking TNF or IL-1 has improved outcome for many patients with inflammatory joint diseases. This thesis addresses the role of HMGB1 (High Mobility Group Box Chromosomal protein 1) in inflammation and as a potential novel therapeutic target molecule in arthritis. READ MORE

38. Molecular mechanisms and complete antigen formation in allergic contact dermatitis
Abstract : Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common T cell mediated skin disease. Small reactive organic molecules called haptens induce ACD. Haptens are not recognized by themselves, but need to bond to endogenous proteins in the skin, and processed further into complete antigens. Antigen specific T cells then recognize the resulting antigen. READ MORE

39. Hyaluronan Derivatives and Injectable Gels for Tissue Engineering
Abstract : The present work describes the preparation of hyaluronan derivatives and hydrogels with potential use in tissue engineering applications. A potentially injectable hydrogel consisting of hyaluronan and collagen was successfully used to grow neurons in vitro by encapsulation of neural stem and progenitor cells. READ MORE

40. T-cell specificity and regulation in atherosclerosis
Abstract : Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in the world. The underlying cause in most cases is atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease. Subendothelial retention of lipoproteins triggers monocyte-derived macrophages and T-helper (Th) 1 cells to form lipid-laden atherosclerotic plaques in the artery wall. READ MORE
