1. Peptidergic innervation of periarticular tissue : a study in the rat
Abstract : Painful musculo-skeletal disorders pose a tremendous burden on the healthcare system, the main reason being the limited knowledge of the underlying pathomechanisms and lack of specific treatment. Hypothetically, the peripheral nervous system in the musculo-skeletal tissues plays an important role in the regulation of pain, inflammation, vasoactivity and also tissue repair. READ MORE

3. Pharmacological and molecular investigations on the mechanisms underlying resistance of human leukaemia cells to the antimetabolites methotrexate, 6-mercaptopurine and 6-thioguanine
Abstract : The goal of this thesis has been to elucidate the mechanisms underlying resistance to methotrexate (MTX), 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and 6-thioguanine (6-TG), the antimetabolites widely used in treatment of childhood leukemia, as well as to determine the influence of 7-hydroxymethotrexate (7-OHMTX), the major metabolite of MTX, on the therapeutic action of MTX. Resistant sublines of leukemic cell lines were developed by long-term exposure to stepwise increasing concentrations of these different agents. READ MORE

4. Interaction of cyclotides and bacteria : A study of the cyclotide action and the bacterial reaction
Abstract : The growing problem of antibiotic resistance and the lack of promising prospective antibiotics have forced us to search for new classes of antibiotics. Among the candidates to develop into future antibacterials are antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). READ MORE

5. Operational Military Violence : A Cartography of Bureaucratic Minds and Practices
Abstract : Western use of military violence is becoming increasingly centralised, partly through the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (or more commonly referred to as “drones” in the literature). Drone technology allows control and command of military operations to be put under one roof, and as military organisations traditionally have a close dependence on technological developments, procedures and regulations for centralised command and control have developed in close concert with advances in drone technology.
