  1. 1. Epidemiology and genetics in ulcerative colitis with special reference to twins and smoking

    Author : Curt Tysk; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ulcerative colitis; ulcerative proctitis; epidemiology; incidence; prevalence; genetics; twins; colonic glycoproteins; smoking; primary sclerosing cholangitis; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : In an epidemiologic study of ulcerative proctocolitis during the period 1963-1987, annual incidence rates increased fourfold and was during the last 10 years 13.1/105 inhabitants. The prevalence on December 31, 1987 was 234/105 inhabitants. Both rates are high but close to recent reports. READ MORE

  2. 2. Intestinal mucins 'soluble and insoluble problems'

    Author : Annkatrin Herrmann; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; colorectal carcinoma; pulse labelling; organ culture; glycopeptide; small intestine; colon; glycoprotein complex; insoluble; muc2; MUC2; Mucin; mucus; carbohydrate; oligosaccharide.; Gastro-enterology; Gastroenterologi;

    Abstract : Highly glycosylated glycoproteins – mucins – are the major constituents of the mucus layer and glycocalyx that cover mucosal surfaces. Twelve human mucin genes have been identified, and the mucins may be divided into those that are membraneassociated and those that are secreted. READ MORE

  3. 3. O-glycosylation of intestinal and respiratory mucins in health and disease

    Author : Jessica Holmén Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mucins; oligosaccharide; O-linked glycosylation; mass spectrometry; MUC2; Fut2 enzyme; Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection; Cystic Fibrosis; Ulcerative colitis;

    Abstract : Mucins are large glycoproteins with a diverse O-glycosylation constituting up to 80% of the total mucin mass. The mucus layer covering the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract is largely made up of gel-forming mucins. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mucus and mucins during gastrointestinal infections

    Author : Nazanin Navabi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mucin; gastrointestinal cell lines; mucus layer; secreted mucin; cell surface mucin; H. pylori; C. rodentium; ETEC; mucin secretion; goblet cells;

    Abstract : The gastrointestinal tract is protected by a continuously secreted mucus layer formed by mucin glycoproteins. The mucus layer and mucins change dynamically during infection. The main focus of this thesis was to investigate the changes in mucin and the mucus layer in the gastrointestinal tract during infection with the gastrointestinal pathogens C. READ MORE

  5. 5. Assembly and proteolytic cleavages of gel-forming mucins

    Author : Martin Lidell; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : mucins; MUC2; MUC5AC; dimer; trimer; cleavage; Entamoeba histolytica; cysteine protease;

    Abstract : Gel-forming mucins are large glycoproteins constituting the main structural component of themucus layer protecting epithelial surfaces of the body. This thesis aims to a deeper understandingof how gel-forming mucins are synthesized and assembled, and how they may interact with othermolecules. READ MORE
