  1. 1. Polyunsaturated fatty acids in relation to childhood and maternal allergic diseases

    Author : Guo Yu; Birgitta Strandvik; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : fatty acids; allergic diseases; atopic diseases; children; mothers; cord blood; serum; colostrum; human milk; IgE; skin prick test; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUPA) in relation to the appem11nce of anergic diseases in children and mothers in late pregnancy and during the lactation period and to the development of atopy in children, as well as the influence of maternal PUF A on their babies.The levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3) and total n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCP) were lower (p = 0. 2. 2. Immune cells in pregnant uterine mucosa : functional properties, cellular composition and tissue organization

    Author : Lucia Mincheva-Nilsson; Sten Hammarström; Rolf Kiessling; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; immunologically privileged site; TCR γδ cells; CD56 cells; large granular lymphocytes; immunosuppression; cytokine; interleukin; lymphoid cell cluster; intraepithelial lymphocytes; glandular epithelium; immuno electron microscopy; pregnancy; decidua; lactoferrin; lactoferrin receptor; colostrum;

    Abstract : The pregnant uterus mucosa - decidua - is an "immunologically privileged" site. A semiallogeneic embryo is allowed to survive, develop, and grow while the same tissue implanted outside the uterus will be rejected. The decidua basalis, which participates in the placenta formation, is a tissue rich in lymphoid cells. READ MORE

  3. 3. Colostrum quality, intestinal microbiota and implications for health in young dairy calves

    Author : Bui Phan Thu Hang; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The early life of calves in southern Vietnam and in Sweden were studied in this thesis, with the focus on colostrum quality, gut microbial communities and antimicrobialresistant Escherichia coli. The first of four studies showed that most cows on smallholder farms in Vietnam produced colostrum of good quality and that only around 10% of calves suffered from failure of passive immune transfer. 4. 4. Genetics of colostrum, milk and serum antibodies in dairy cattle: implications for health and production

    Author : Juan Cordero; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Colostrum with sufficient IgG content is essential for the newborn calf, as it requires this passive immunity to survive during its rearing. Failure of passive transfer (FPT) occurs when a calf does not absorb enough antibodies (... READ MORE

  5. 5. Early infant gut flora and neutral oligosaccharides in colostrum in relation to allergy development in children

    Author : Ylva Sjögren; Eva Sverremark-Ekström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Immunology; Immunologi;

    Abstract : Today, atopic allergy is the most common chronic disease among children in the developed world. The increase in allergy prevalence during the past decades in these countries might be associated with lower microbial exposure. READ MORE
