  1. 16. Observations of nearby Galaxy Clusters with the Fermi Large Area Telescope : Towards the first Gamma Rays from Clusters

    Author : Stephan Zimmer; Jan Conrad; Lars Bergström; Torsten Enßlin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Galaxy Clusters; Fermi-LAT; γ rays; Dark Matter; Cosmic Rays; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Galaxy clusters are the most massive bound systems known in the Universe and are believed to have formed through large scale structure formation. They host relativistic cosmic-ray (CR) populations and are gravitationally bound by large amounts of Dark Matter (DM), both providing conditions in which high-energy gamma rays may be produced either via CR interactions with the intracluster medium or through the annihilation or decay of DM particles. 2. 17. Peripheral Vision : Adaptive Optics and Psychophysics

    Author : Robert Rosén; Peter Unsbo; Larry Thibos; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis is about our peripheral vision. Peripheral vision is poor compared to central vision, due to both neural and optical factors. The optical factors include astigmatism, defocus and higher order aberrations consisting mainly of coma. Neurally, the density of ganglion cells decreases towards the periphery, which limits the sampling density. READ MORE

  3. 18. Cerebral malaria in children in the highlands of Kenya : Aspects of pathogenesis and clinical presentation

    Author : Fabian Esamai; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Background: Malaria affects over 300 million persons in the world each year with a mortality of close to 2 million. In developing countries malaria has been endemic in the lowlands for centuries with no occurrence in the highlands above 2000 metres above sea level. READ MORE

  4. 19. Brain, consciousness and disorders of consciousness at the intersection of neuroscience and philosophy

    Author : Michele Farisco; Kathinka Evers; Wolf Singer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Brain; consciousness; disorders of consciousness; neuroethics; neurophilosophy; Filosofi; Philosophy; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : The present dissertation starts from the general claim that neuroscience is not neutral, with regard to theoretical questions like the nature of consciousness, but it needs to be complemented with dedicated conceptual analysis. Specifically, the argument for this thesis is that the combination of empirical and conceptual work is a necessary step for assessing the significant questions raised by the most recent study of the brain. 5. 20. Traumatic brain injury in elderly patients

    Author : Samuel Lenell; Per Enblad; Anders Lewén; Alfonso Lagares; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Traumatic brain injury; Elderly; Outcome; Standardized neurosurgical intensive care; Quality register; Prognostic factors; Secondary insults; Neurointensive care monitoring; Pressure reactivity index; Optimal cerebral perfusion pressure; Cerebral autoregulation; Neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : The increase of elderly traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients constitutes a considerable challenge. The aim was therefore to specifically study elderly TBI patients with respect to patient characteristics, neurointensive care (NIC) and outcome, and to identify age specific features, which may be important for selection of patients and optimization of NIC in the elderly.
