  1. 1. Ultrasound, ions and combined modalities for increased local tumour cell death in radiation therapy

    Author : Annica Jernberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Focused ultrasound; ionising radiation; high-LET; cisplatin; combined modalities; cell survival; cellular effects;

    Abstract : In this thesis, new approaches to improve tumour therapy for patients with inoperable, radiation- and chemoresistant tumours were in focus. Ultrasound and ionising radiation, especially accelerated ions, are both non-invasive agents that have high precision and deep penetration in tissues, enabling increased dose to the tumour while sparing the normal tissues. 2. 2. Regulation of protein synthesis in human skeletal muscle : separate and combined effects of exercise and amino acids

    Author : William Apró; Eva Blomstrand; Olav Rooyackers; Hans-Christer Holmberg; Michael Kjaer; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Abstract : Skeletal muscle is a highly plastic tissue which has the ability to adapt to various forms of external stimuli such as diverse modes of contractile activity. Thus, performance of endurance exercise over several of weeks results in increased oxidative capacity. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cardiac Performance, Ventricular-Vascular Interaction and Functional Alterations in Rheumatic Mitral Stenosis : A descriptive study employing novel hemodynamic and echocardiographic modalities

    Author : Ashwin Venkateshvaran; Lars-Åke Brodin; Per Lindquist; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Tillämpad medicinsk teknik; Applied Medical Technology;

    Abstract : The assessment of LV performance poses significant challenges in the setting of rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) owing to an inherently load-altered state. A detailed characterization of arterial-ventricular coupling between subjects with isolated post-capillary pulmonary hypertension (Ipc-PH) and combined pre- and post-capillary pulmonary hypertension (Cpc-PH) has not been described. 4. 4. Photodynamic Therapy utilizing Interstitial Light Delivery Combined with Spectroscopic Methods

    Author : Marcelo Soto Thompson; Atomfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; onkologi; Cytologi; cancerology; oncology; Cytology; fiber optics; dosimetry; spectroscopy; tissue optics; laser-induced fluorescence; medical laser systems; Laserteknik; cancer; photodynamic therapy; interstitial; Laser technology; Fysicumarkivet A:2004:Soto Thompson;

    Abstract : Since cancer continues to plague humanity there is large need for development of modalities for both diagnosis and therapy. Most of the currently available methods suffer from serious disadvantages. The treatments, e.g. READ MORE

  5. 5. Pulmonary embolism : validation of diagnostic imaging methods in the clinical setting

    Author : Tage Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Computed tomography; lung scintigraphy; pulmonary arteriography; pulmonary embolism; D-dimer;

    Abstract : Pulmonary embolism (PE) is an elusive diagnosis and none of the existing imaging modalities have a 100% diagnostic specificity or sensitivity. Pulmonary arteriography (PA) is the most specific test although the improvement of computed tomography technique has made this a commonly used method. Lung scintigraphy often gives ambiguous results.
