6. Melt flow and surface stability effects on polymer flammability : A study on polystyrene, flexible polyurethane foam and polyolefin composites
Abstract : Our ability to accurately determine the flammability properties of polymers is hampered bythe erratic effects of deformation and liquid flow that occur during polymer combustion. This study aims to improve the understanding of such effects at several levels: The often obvious impact of melt flow on standardized flammability test methods forelectrical appliances is described to identify the need and to motivate others to worktowards an improved material characterization. 7. Numerical Studies of Flow and AssociatedLosses in the Exhaust Port of a Diesel Engine
Abstract : In the last decades, the focus of internal combustion engine development has moved towards more efficient and less pollutant engines. In a Diesel engine, approximately 30-40% of the energy provided by combustion is lost through the exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are hot and therefore rich of energy. READ MORE

8. Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flow and Combustion in HCCI Engines
Abstract : This thesis deals with numerical simulations of the turbulent combustion process in Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines. An accurate and computationally efficient Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model was developed and used throughout this thesis to investigate the development of in-cylinder turbulence, temperature stratification, onset of auto-ignition, and development of the reaction fronts. 9. Laser Diagnostics of HCCI and Partially Premixed Combustion
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis deals with measuring in-cylinder combustion species and events using different laser-based diagnostic methods. A variety of engine operating modes, like HCCI and partially premixed diesel combustion, have been investigated. READ MORE

10. In-Nozzle Flow, Spray and Combustion Investigations of Two-Stroke Marine Diesel Engine Fuel Injectors
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the experimental studies of the cavitating in-nozzle flow of large two-stroke marine Diesel engine fuel injector nozzles and how it affects the spray morphology and combustion behaviour. To further increase the efficiency of large two-stroke marine Diesel engines, a better understanding of the fuel spray atomization process is necessary. READ MORE
