  1. 1. Hazard assessment of ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole and triclosan for marine periphyton : Ecotoxicology, Pollution Induced Community Tolerance and Co-Tolerance

    Author : Henrik Johansson; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2014]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecotoxicology; Antibioitcs; Antimicrobial agents; Ciprofloxacin; Sulfamethoxazole; Triclosan; Community ecotoxicology; Periphyton; Toxicant-induced succession; Pollution-Induced Community Tolerance PICT ;

    Abstract : Antibiotics and personal care products are used in large quantities and commonly detected in various environmental compartments. The two antibiotics, ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole, and the personal care product triclosan are among the most commonly detected compounds in sewage treatment plants and aquatic environments. 2. 2. Macroalgal community dynamics on coral reefs Implications for management

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Systems Ecology, Stockholm University

    Author : Erik Mörk; Nils Kautsky; Magnus Nyström; Tim R. McClanahan; Stein Fredriksen; [2011]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral Reefs; Herbivory; Nutrients; Ecosystem change; Fish; Sea Urchins; East Africa; Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : Although rather inconspicuous on healthy coral reefs, macroalgae form the basis of coral food webs. Today, macroalgae are generally increasing and many reefs undergo transitions from coral to macroalgal dominance resulting from e.g. enhanced nutrient loading or increased fishing. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ecological effects of pesticides in freshwater model ecosystems

    University dissertation from Lina Wendt-Rasch, Ecotoxicology, Ecologybuilding, Sölvegatan 37, Lund, Sweden

    Author : Lina Wendt-Rasch; [2003]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; Hydrobiology; community; zooplankton; algae; herbicide; insecticide; pesticide mixture; macrophytes; cypermethrin; metsulfuron-methyl; risk assessment; pesticides; microcosms; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis I have investigated the effects of pesticide exposure on the ecosystem level using various types of experimental ecosystems, i.e. microcosms. The direct effect of exposure to cyperemthrin, a pyretroid insecticide, was a rapid decrease of crustancean zooplankton in enclosures in a lake. READ MORE

  4. 4. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    University dissertation from Department of Biology, Lund University

    Author : Melanie Hedgespeth; [2015]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Abstract : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models. 5. 5. On Toxicant-Induced Succession in Periphyton Communities: Effects of Single Chemicals and Chemical Mixtures

    University dissertation from Göteborg : University of Gothenburg

    Author : Tobias Porsbring; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2009]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; community ecotoxicology; toxicant-induced succession; chemical mixtures; concentration addition; independent action; diatoms; periphyton; algal pigments; algal sterols;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the effects of single chemicals and chemical mixtures on biological communities. Ecosystems are exposed to complex mixtures of chemicals, and because combination effects can occ... READ MORE
