  1. 16. Role of ecological processes in determining effects of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems

    Author : Anna-Lea Golz; Clare Bradshaw; Karen Kidd; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecosystem approach; ionizing radiation; HBCDD; microcosm; species interactions; indirect effects; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Aquatic ecosystems cover approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface and support a wide range of ecosystem services. Despite their importance, aquatic ecosystems are increasingly exposed to anthropogenic stressors, such as contaminants and climate change impacts. READ MORE

  2. 17. Marine seaweed invasions : Impacts and biotic resistance in native ecosystems

    Author : Josefin Sagerman; Sofia Wikström; Fransisco Arenas; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant invasion; exotic species; generalist herbivores; plant-herbivore interactions; enemy-release hypothesis; ecosystem function; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Marine seaweeds constitute one of the most productive plant systems known on Earth and a rich fauna including juvenile fish and crustaceans is dependent on the habitats they form. Human influence on marine costal ecosystems has resulted in large scale changes to the abundance and distribution of species, where species introductions constitute an obvious part. READ MORE

  3. 18. Pharmaecological perspectives : Exposure studies using coastal Baltic Sea organisms

    Author : Hanna Oskarsson; Linda Kumblad; Ann-Kristin Eriksson Wiklund; Johan Eklöf; Nina Cedergreen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pharmaceuticals; Baltic Sea; Mytilus edulis trossulus; Fucus vesiculosus; Ceramium tenuicorne; Gammarus spp.; Direct effects; Inter-specific interactions; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the effects of pharmaceutical substances on coastal Baltic Sea organisms. Despite an increasing awareness of the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in various aquatic compartments, current knowledge of their possible effects on non-target organisms is limited. 4. 19. Ecological and physiological aspects of contaminant accumulation and transport by the filter-feeding mussel, Mytilus edulis

    Author : Mikael Björk; Jussi Kukkonen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the influence of food availability on the bioaccumulation kinetics and the transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) by the Baltic Sea blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. In laboratory studies, food availability was found to significantly modify the rate of physiological processes involved in filter-feeding. READ MORE

  5. 20. Managing sea cucumber fisheries and aquaculture : Studies of social-ecological systems in the Western Indian Ocean

    Author : Hampus Eriksson; Maricela de la Torre-Castro; Juan Carlos Castilla; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sea cucumbers; Bêche-de-mer; Trepang; Echinoderms; Fisheries; Aquaculture; Governance; Trade; Seafood; Tropical seascape; Zanzibar; Mayotte; Western Indian Ocean; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Collecting sea cucumbers to supply the high value Chinese dried seafood market is a livelihood activity available to many people in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), making it an important part of local economies. These fisheries are generally not successfully managed and tropical sea cucumber fisheries show continuing signs of decline. READ MORE
