  1. 1. Application of Genomic and Expression Arrays for Identification of new Cancer Genes

    Author : Helena Nord; Teresita Díaz de Ståhl; Jan Dumanski; Susan Pfeifer; Blomquist Erik; Segersten Ulrika; David Gisselsson Nord; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Array-CGH; Expression array; Copy number variation; Glioblastoma; Medulloblastoma; Bladder carcinoma; Oncogenes; Tumor suppressor genes; Molecular medicine genetics and pathology ; Molekylär medicin genetik och patologi ; Medical genetics; Medicinsk genetik; Tumour biology; Tumörbiologi; Genetics; Genetik; Medical Genetics; Medicinsk genetik;

    Abstract : Copy number variation (CNV) comprises a recently discovered kind of variation involving deletion and duplication of DNA segments of variable size, ranging from a few hundred basepairs to several million. By altering gene dosage levels or disrupting proximal or distant regulatory elements CNVs create human diversity. READ MORE

  2. 2. A Genetic Survey of the Pathogenic Parasite Trypanosoma cruzi

    Author : Anh-Nhi Tran; Lena Åslund; John Kelly; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; Trypanosoma cruzi; Chagas ; gene discovery; EST; sequencing; DGC3; repeats; gene family; CL Brener; trypanothione synthetase; TcTRS locus; alleles; polymorphism; RNA-binding protein; TcPTB; stage-specific expression; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik; medicinsk genetik; Medical Genetics;

    Abstract : Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas´ disease, is an evolutionarily ancient species with distinct biological and immunological characteristics. A fundamental understanding of the basic biology of the parasite is necessary in order to develop reliable therapeutic and prophylactic agents against T. cruzi. We have, as a part of the T. 3. 3. Investigation of Mechanics of Mutation and Selection by Comparative Sequencing

    Author : Michael C. Zody; Kerstin Lindblad-Toh; Leif Andersson; Chad Nusbaum; Henrik Kaessmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chicken; chimpanzee; human; evolution; segmental duplication; structural variation; chromosomal rearrangement; comparative genomics; positive selection; selective sweep; Genetics; Genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : The process of evolution is of both scientific and medical interest. This thesis presents several studies using complete genomic reference sequences, comparative genomic data, and intraspecific diversity data to study the two key processes of evolution: mutation and selection. 4. 4. Development and Application of Human Chromosome 22 Genomic Microarray : Chromosome 22-Associated Disorders Analyzed by Array-Based Comparative Genomic Hybridization

    Author : Magdalena Benetkiewicz; Jan Dumanski; Niklas Dahl; Frank Speleman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; DNA copy number changes; chromosome 22; genomic microarray; array-CGH; schwannoma; neurofibromatosis type 2; ovarian carcinoma; breast cancer; Wilms tumor; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : The array-based form of comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH) is a new methodology that has shown to be of significant importance. This thesis focuses on the development of array-CGH with the aim to define candidate regions/genes on chromosome 22 in a wide spectrum of cancer-related conditions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Site-specific recombination in P2-like coliphages

    Author : Carlos Cardoso Palacios; Elisabeth Haggård-Ljungquist; Didier Mazel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetics; Genetik; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : The scope of these studies has been to investigate the site-specific recombination systems of P2-like coliphages, both in an evolutionary perspective by a comparative analysis of related phages as well as in a functional perspective. Surveys of P2-like phages in Escherichia coli isolated from nature reveal the existence of seven discrete immunity classes and three integration sites, one of them previously unknown. READ MORE
