  1. 1. Hematopoiesis in a Crustacean

    Author : Xionghui Lin; Irene Söderhäll; Kenneth Söderhäll; Michael J. Williams; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; astakine; cytokine; hematopoiesis; prokineticin; transglutaminase; ATP synthase; innate immunity; apoptosis; Immunology; Immunologi; Biology with specialization in Comparative Physiology; Biologi med inriktning mot jämförande fysiologi;

    Abstract : Hemocytes (blood cells) play an important role in the immune response in invertebrates, and thus the regulation of hemocyte homeostasis (hematopoiesis) is essential for the host survival against pathogens. Astakine 1, a homologue to vertebrate prokineticins, was first identified in the freshwater crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus as a cytokine, and was found to be necessary for new hemocyte synthesis and release in vivo, and also to induce spreading and proliferation of Hematopoietic tissue cells (Hpt cells, precursor of hemocytes) in vitro. 2. 2. Innate Immune Proteins in a Crustacean Pacifastacus leniusculus

    Author : Chenglin Wu; Irene Söderhäll; petr Kopácek; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 2-DE; hematopoiesis; marker protein; melaniztion inhibiting protein; proPO-system; pattern recognition protein; PGN; ficolin-like protein; Immunology; Immunologi; Biology with specialization in Comparative Physiology; Biologi med inriktning mot jämförande fysiologi;

    Abstract : Hemocytes (blood cells) are important in the immune defense against pathogens in invertebrates. In crusteacean, the hemocytes and plasma components mount a strong innate immune response against different pathogens including bacteria and virus. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic Characterization of Chicken Models for Autoimmune Disease

    Author : Anna-Stina Sahlqvist; Olov Ekwall; Olle Kämpe; Leif Andersson; Susanne Kerje; Holger Luthman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Autoimmune disease; Hashimoto’s thyroiditis; systemic sclerosis; comparative genomics; linkage analysis; OS chickens; spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis; UCD-200 chickens.; Molekylär medicin; Molecular Medicine;

    Abstract : Autoimmune diseases are endemic, but the disease mechanisms are poorly understood. A way to better understand these are to find disease-regulating genes. However, this is difficult as the diseases are complex, with several genes as well as environmental factors influencing the development of disease. READ MORE

  4. 4. Immune defense reactions in freshwater crayfish : Cellular components

    Author : Charlotta Ekblom; Irene Söderhäll; Kallaya Sritunyalucksana-Dangtip; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; crustaceans; hemocytes; immunity; crayfish; proteomics; transcriptomics; Biology with specialization in Comparative Physiology; Biologi med inriktning mot jämförande fysiologi;

    Abstract : The freshwater signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, is a well-established model for studying the immune system of invertebrates. Many important discoveries have been made in this species, among others related to the clotting reaction, hematopoiesis, the prophenoloxidase activating system, the functions of crustacean immune cells, and pathogen recognition.
