6. Mechanical and Environmental Durability of High Performance Bio-based Composites
Abstract : This study is an initial step within the on-going project on development of high performance bio-based composites with improved mechanical (fatigue) and environmental (elevated humidity and temperature) durability. In the presented thesis the performance of cellulosic fibers (flax and regenerated cellulose), bio-based resins (Tribest, EpoBioX, Palapreg, and Envirez) and their composites under exposure to elevated humidity has been studied. 7. The initial phase of sodium sulfite pulping of softwood : A comparison of different pulping options
Abstract : Single stage and two-stage sodium sulfite cooking were carried out on either spruce, pine or pure pine heartwood chips to investigate the influence of several process parameters on the initial phase of such a cook down to about 60 % pulp yield. The cooking experiments were carried out in the laboratory with either a lab-prepared or a mill-prepared cooking acid and the temperature and time were varied. READ MORE

8. Engineering Yeast Metabolism for Production of Sesquiterpenes
Abstract : Sesquiterpenes belong to the large and diverse group of isoprenoids, which are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom and have various applications in the chemical industry as fragrances, pharmaceuticals and as substitutes for petroleum-based gasoline, diesel and jet fuels. In this project, production of sesquiterpenes was studied in Saccharomyces cerevisiae using farnesene as an example with the objective to gain new insights into the synthesis of these compounds and to evaluate different metabolic engineering strategies. 9. Constitutive Behaviour and Fracture of Adhesive Layers : Inverse Methods and Energetic Balance
Abstract : In the automobile industry, current demands on reduced emissions with maintained or even increased crash worthiness, forces the industry to seek weight-reducing designs. The possibility to use lightweight materials is obviously attractive. At joints, these lightweight materials have to be connected to high-strength or low-cost materials. READ MORE

10. Integration of Surface Acoustic Wave and Microfluidic Technologies for Liquid-Phase Sensing Applications
Abstract : This thesis discusses a new concept for construction of a novel SAW in-liquid sensor employing surface acoustic wave resonance (SAR) in a one-port configuration. In this concept, the reflective gratings of a one-port SAW resonator are employed as mass loading-sensing elements, while the SAW transducer is protected from the measurement environment, reducing power losses significantly.
