  2. 12. Spread and distribution of drug resistance and compensatory mutations in Plasmodium falciparum

    Author : Irina Tatiana Jovel Quiñonez Dalmau; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In 2010 there were an estimated 216 million cases of malaria worldwide. In Honduras there were ~9000 cases of which 88% were due to Plasmodium vivax mono-infection. Chloroquine (CQ) resistant Plasmodium falciparum have spread throughout the world curtailing its use. READ MORE

  3. 13. Aneuploidy compensatory mechanisms and genome-wide regulation of gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster

    Author : Lina Lundberg; Jan Larsson; Brian Oliver; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genome-wide gene regulation; aneuploidy; buffering; HP1a; POF; SETDB1; Su var 3-9; MSL; roX; genetik; Genetics;

    Abstract : Stimulation or repression of gene expression by genome-wide regulatory mechanisms is an important epigenetic regulatory function which can act to efficiently regulate larger regions or specific groups of genes, for example by compensating for loss or gain of chromosome copy numbers. In Drosophila melanogaster there are two known chromosome-wide regulatory systems; the MSL complex, which mediates dosage compensation of the single male X-chromosome and POF, which stimulates expression from the heterochromatic 4th chromosome. 4. 14. On the Ecology and Evolution of seed and Bud Dormancy

    Author : Patric Nilsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bet-hedging; overcompensation; herbivory; plant compensatory growth; bud dormancy; endosperm; seed provisioning; Seed dormancy; parent-offspring conflicts; Ecology; Ekologi; Botany; Botanik;

    Abstract : This thesis considers the ecological and evolutionary significance of seed and bud dormancy. First, I present theoretical support to the idea that seed dormancy may evolve as a strategy to reduce sib competition in temporally homogeneous environments. READ MORE

  5. 15. Neurointensive Care of Children with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury : Studies of barbiturate coma treatment, intracranial compliance, pressure autoregulation and optimal cerebral perfusion pressure

    Author : Fartein Velle; Per Enblad; Shruti Agrawal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Traumatic brain injury; Children; Refractory intracranial hypertension; Barbiturate coma; Intracranial compensatory reserve; autoregulation; cerebral microdialysis.; Neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most common causes of death and acquired disability during childhood. Management guidelines for pediatric patients are usually extrapolated from adults. Specific pediatric studies are warranted to improve the TBI management in children. READ MORE
