  1. 6. District heating in future Europe : Modelling expansion potentials and mapping heat synergy regions

    Author : Urban Persson; Sven Werner; Lars J. Nilsson; Sweden Gothenburg Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; district heating; energy efficiency; distribution capital cost; heat demand density; plot ratio; excess heat recovery; sequential energy supply; heat utilisation rate; effective width;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a set of methodologies and approaches to investigate and determine the extent by which district heating can contribute to improved energy system efficiency and reduced carbon dioxide emissions in future Europe. The main motivation for suggesting large-scale implementation of district heating as a structural energy efficiency measure to obtain these objectives originates essentially in the predicament that a majority of European buildings today remain highly dependent on fossil fuels to provide energy needed for space heating and hot water preparation. 2. 7. The link between brain size, cognitive ability, mate choice and sexual behaviour in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

    Author : Alberto Corral López; Niclas Kolm; Janette Boughman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sexual selection; artificial selection; brain evolution; optomotor test; decision-making; discrimination; assessment; optimal decisions; rational choice; behavioural flexibility; expensive tissue; predation; sex ratio; OSR; maintenance of variation; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : Competition over access for mates has led to the evolution of many striking examples of morphological traits and behaviour in animals. The rapid development of the sexual selection field in recent decades have dramatically advanced our understanding of what traits make individuals more successful in attracting mates and how preferences for mates evolve over time. 3. 8. Analytical Results on the Performance of Shared Resource Allocation Systems

    Author : Iosif Salem; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; energy dispatch problem; shared-object systems; Resource allocation; analytical performance evaluation;

    Abstract : Resource allocation is a prevalent problem in a wide range of domains of computer science. Analytical tools that evaluate the performance of resource allocation systems allow us to compare with experimental ones, and utilize the design of such systems. READ MORE

  4. 9. Conformal chemical vapor deposition of boron carbide thin films

    Author : Arun Haridas Choolakkal; Jens Birch; Henrik Pedersen; Hans Högberg; Tobias Törndahl; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The sustainability goals of the modern world and the fascinating properties of sub-micron scale materials promote development of materials in thin film form. Thin films are materials that have thicknesses ranging from sub-nanometer to several micrometers, synthesized by various deposition techniques. READ MORE

  5. 10. Decentralized Control Design with Limited Plant Model Information

    Author : Farhad Farokhi; Karl Henrik Johansson; Ather Gattami; Jeff S. Shamma; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Large-scale control systems are often composed of several smaller interconnected units. For these systems, it is common to employ local controllers, which observe and act locally. READ MORE
