  1. 26. Structural and functional studies of C4b-binding protein (C4BP)

    Author : Lena Kask; Malmö Klinisk kemi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; phagocytosis; apoptosis; protein S; complement control protein CCP domains; factor H fH ; Complement; C4b-binding protein C4BP ; intracellular assembly; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : The subject of this thesis is complement inhibitor C4b-binding protein (C4BP), on which we have performed both structural and functional studies. Complement is part of the innate immune defence and eliminates microbes, solubilises immune complexes and is involved in the clearance of apoptotic cells. READ MORE

  2. 27. Feedback Enhancement of Immune Responses by IgE, IgM, and IgG3 Antibodies

    Author : Zhoujie Ding; Birgitta Heyman; Eva Severinson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; IgE; IgM; IgG3; antibody responses; T-cell responses; antigen transportation; antigen presentation; complement; complement receptors 1 and 2; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Antibodies can enhance or suppress the immune responses against their specific antigens. This phenomenon is known as antibody-mediated feedback regulation. We have studied the mechanisms underlying IgE-, IgM-, and IgG3-mediated enhancement of immune responses in mouse models using intravenous immunization. READ MORE

  3. 28. Studies on Potency and breadth of HIV-1, HIV-2 and SIV neutralizing antibody responses

    Author : Gülsen Özkaya Sahin; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV-1; HIV-2; SIV; envelope; neutralizing antibody; breadth; potency; IgG; IgA; complement; antibody-dependent complement-mediated inactivation; virus evolution; diversity; divergence;

    Abstract : Even though the relative contribution of neutralizing antibodies (Nab) to prevent progression to AIDS during HIV-1 infection is still unclear, the induction of broadly NAb directed against HIV-1 through vaccination is considered to represent an important goal for the development of HIV-1 vaccines. Factors contributing to the induction of NAb may include the strength and duration of antigenic stimulation, the preservation of CD4+ T and B cells, the conformation of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein complex (Env), and the evolution of Env during infection. 4. 29. Development and evaluation of immunoassays for complement diagnostics

    Author : Kerstin Sandholm; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Ingvar Ryden; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immune assays; complement diagnostics; xMAP-technology; C1q; preanalytical factors; method validation; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Laboratory analyses of human body fluids play an important role in clinical diagnosis. This thesis comprises projects in which various immune assays have been developed and evaluated as complement diagnostics in both plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). READ MORE

  5. 30. Complement in Autoimmunity - the importance of clearing waste

    Author : Jonatan Leffler; Malmö Proteinkemi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; annexins; apoptosis; Complement system; neutrophil extracellular traps; systemic lupus erythematosus; C1q; factor H; histones;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease where improperly cleared apoptotic cells and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) induce an autoimmune response. Complement is crucial to prevent SLE by tailoring immune responses and opsonizing dead cells but may also induce inflammation and tissue damage once the disease is initiated. READ MORE
