1. Understanding the genetic basis of complex traits
Abstract : Recent advances in genetics and genomics have provided numerous opportunities to study the genetic basis of complex traits. Nevertheless, dissecting the genetic basis of complex traits is still challenged by the complex genetic architecture, in which many genes are involved, and many have small contributions to phenotypic variation, interactions with other genes or environmental factors. 2. Shaping urban environments through human selection for plant traits
Abstract : Cities, as home to the majority of the world’s people, are significant sites for addressing challenges of achieving sustainability and securing human wellbeing. Urban environments are complex social-ecological systems, and meeting these challenges requires better understandings of the interactions of social and ecological elements. READ MORE

3. Functional Traits in Sphagnum
Abstract : Peat mosses (Sphagnum) are ecosystem engineers that largely govern carbon sequestration in northern hemisphere peatlands. I investigated functional traits in Sphagnum species and addressed the questions: (I) Are growth, photosynthesis and decomposition and the trade-offs between these traits related to habitat or phylogeny?, (II) Which are the determinants of decomposition and are there trade-offs between metabolites that affect decomposition?, (III) How do macro-climate and local environment determine growth in Sphagnum across the Holarctic?, (IV) How does N2 fixation vary among different species and habitats?, (V) How do species from different microtopographic niches avoid or tolerate desiccation, and are leaf and structural traits adaptations to growth high above the water table?Photosynthetic rate and decomposition in laboratory conditions (innate growth and decay resistance) were related to growth and decomposition in their natural habitats. 4. Complex Trait Genetics : Beyond Additivity
Abstract : The link between the genotype and the phenotype of an organism is immensely complex. Despite this it can, to a great extent, be captured using models that assume that gene variants combine their effects in an additive manner. This thesis explores aspects of genetics that cannot be fully captured using such additive models. READ MORE

5. Novel strategies to explore The complex genetics of autoimmune diseases
Abstract : Autoimmune diseases are dependent on both genetic and environmental factors in complex interplay. They arise from a faulty immune response against self-antigens, and causes great suffering in affected individuals. Despite large efforts and hundreds of thousands of research articles published, the disease etiologies remain largely unknown. READ MORE
