1. Insights from modeling renewable electricity systems and developing hydropower models
Abstract : One strategy for reaching a carbon-neutral electricity system is a large-scale deployment of wind and solar power. However, electricity systems with high shares of wind and solar power rely on other technologies, e.g. READ MORE

2. Modeling aspects of reliability-based design of lined rock caverns
Abstract : The storage of large quantities of hydrogen gas in underground lined rock caverns (LRCs) could contribute to an efficient supply of fossil-free energy. The consequences of failure of such storage can be catastrophic, so representative predictive models and a small probability of failure are needed for the LRC design. READ MORE

3. Modeling and optimization of least-cost corridors
Abstract : Given a grid of cells, each having a value indicating its cost per unit area, a variant of the least-cost path problem is to find a corridor of a specified width connecting two termini such that its cost-weighted area is minimized. A computationally efficient method exists for finding such corridors, but as is the case with conventional raster-based least-cost paths, their incremental orientations are limited to a fixed number of (typically eight orthogonal and diagonal) directions, and therefore, regardless of the grid resolution, they tend to deviate from those conceivable on the Euclidean plane. 4. Computationally efficient methods in spatial statistics : Applications in environmental modeling
Abstract : In this thesis, computationally efficient statistical models for large spatial environmental data sets are constructed. In the first part of the thesis, a method for estimating spatially dependent temporal trends is developed. A space-varying regression model, where the regression coefficients for the spatial locations are dependent, is used. READ MORE

5. Interface modeling - friction and wear
Abstract : The general trend toward increased use of computer models and simulations during product development calls for accurate and reliable product models. The function of many products relies on contact interfaces between interacting components. Simulating the behavior of such products requires accurate models of both components and interfaces.
