  1. 6. Power ideals, Fröberg conjecture and Waring problems

    Author : Alessandro Oneto; Boris Shapiro; Ralf Fröberg; Kristian Ranestad; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; power ideals; Hilbert function; fat points; Waring problem; matematik; Mathematics;

    Abstract : This thesis is divided into two chapters. First, we want to study particularclasses of power ideals, with particular attention to their relation with the Fröberg conjecture on the Hilbert series of generic ideals. READ MORE

  2. 7. Snarks : Generation, coverings and colourings

    Author : Jonas Hägglund; Roland Häggkvist; Klas Markström; Luis Goddyn; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Snarks; cubic graphs; enumeration; cycle covers; perfect matching covers; Fulkerson s conjecture; strong cycle double cover conjecture; cycle decompositions; stable cycles; oddness; circumference; uncolourability measures; Mathematics; matematik;

    Abstract : For a number of unsolved problems in graph theory such as the cycle double cover conjecture, Fulkerson's conjecture and Tutte's 5-flow conjecture it is sufficient to prove them for a family of graphs called snarks. Named after the mysterious creature in Lewis Carroll's poem, a \emph{snark} is a cyclically 4-edge connected 3-regular graph of girth at least 5 which cannot be properly edge coloured using three colours. 3. 8. Dualities, affine vertex operator algebras, and geometry of complex polynomials

    Author : Julius Borcea; Matematik (naturvetenskapliga fakulteten); []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sendov s conjecture; annihilating fields; relative vertex operators; twisted modules; vertex operator algebras; Affine Lie algebras; standard modules; geometry of polynomials.; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of two parts which deal with different subjects. In the first part we study certain aspects of the representation theory of affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras and related structures. READ MORE

  4. 9. The relationship between orthology, protein domain architecture and protein function

    Author : Kristoffer Forslund; Erik Sonnhammer; Cristina Al-Khalili Szigyarto; Sarah Teichmann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; homology; orthology; paralogy; gene duplications; protein function prediction; low-complexity regions; protein domains; domain architecture evolution; introns; intron position conservation; orthology conjecture; domain grammar hypothesis; biokemi; inriktning teoretisk kemi; Biochemistry with Emphasis on Theoretical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Lacking experimental data, protein function is often predicted from evolutionary and protein structure theory. Under the 'domain grammar' hypothesis the function of a protein follows from the domains it encodes. READ MORE

  5. 10. Tensor Products of Highest Weight Representations and Skew-Symmetric Matrix Equations A+B+C=0

    Author : Ida Säfström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Highest weight respresentation; tensor product decomposition; orthogonal algebra; skew-symmetric matrix; Horn’s conjecture; moment map; coadjoint orbit; flag manifold; general linear algebra; infinite dimensional unitary representation; general linear algebra;

    Abstract : The question of characterizing the eigenvalues for the sum of two Hermitian matrices, was solved in 1999, after almost a century of efforts. The saturation conjecture for GL_C(n) was proven by Knutson and Tao, filling in the last gap in Horn’s conjecture. READ MORE
