  1. 6. Biomarkers and bioindicators of hypoxia and sediment toxicity in Monoporeia affinis

    Author : Marie Löf; Brita Sundelin; Tina Elfwing; Elena Gorokhova; Ingela Dahllöf; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biomarkers; Bioindicators; Embryo aberrations; Hypoxia; Contaminated sediment; PAHs; PCBs; Metals; Baltic Sea; Amphipods; Monoporeia affinis; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Two of the most pressing environmental problems in the Baltic Sea are pollution and oxygen deficiency. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to evaluate a set of biomarkers and reproductive variables in the amphipod Monoporeia affinis to test their suitability as indicators of exposure to contaminants and hypoxia. 2. 7. Contaminated sediments: Methods to assess release and toxicity of organic chemical mixtures

    Author : Lukas Mustajärvi; Anna Sobek; Jarkko Akkanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment; Hydrophobic organic contaminants; Flux; Bioturbation; Passive sampling; Passive dosing; Mixture toxicity; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Bottom sediments around the world store large amounts of legacy hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), forming mixtures of unknown chemical composition. Primary emissions to the environment of many HOCs have been reduced as a consequence of regulation. READ MORE

  3. 8. In situ remediation of contaminated sediments using thin-layer capping : efficiency in contaminant retention and ecological implications

    Author : Göran S. Samuelsson; Jonas S. Gunnarsson; Bart Koelmans; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Contaminated Sediment Remediation; Activated Carbon; Benthic Community; Ecological Effects; Stress; Resilience; Contaminant Sequestration; Capping Efficiency; Bioavailability; Bioaccumulation; Sediment-to-water fluxes; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) often reside in sediments sorbed to particles, most tightly to particles with high content of organic carbon. If persistent, such pollutants can accumulate in the sediment for many years and constitute a contamination risk for sediment-living organisms and organisms at higher trophic levels, including humans. 4. 9. Mobilization of metals from mining wastes and the resuspension of contaminated sediments

    Author : Lan Thuy Nguyen; Bo Svensson; Gunnar Jacks; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acid Rock Drainage; hydropower plant; metal contamination; mining wastes; storm-wind; resuspension; sediment; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : In some environmental situations, environmental effects caused by elevated metals resulting from past mining and smelting activities can be observed in nearby receiving water bodies several decades after mine and smelter closure. There is a growing need for managing the hazardous solid wastes such as mining wastes as well as for assessing water quality and for sustainable management of sediment quality. READ MORE

  5. 10. Accumulation and Composition of Gully Pot Sediments under Varying Anthropogenic Activities

    Author : Haoyu Wei; Lian Lundy; Maria Viklander; David Butler; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Catch basin; Stormwater; Sediment; Urban runoff; Xenobiotics; Gully pot maintenance; Emerging pollutant; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering;

    Abstract : Gully pots (GPs) are an integral urban drainage component, contributing to conveying runoff from urban surfaces and reducing the load of solids and associated contaminants entering downstream piped systems and receiving waters. Over time, the silting-up of GPs impairs their hydraulic performance, increasing the risk of GP blockage-induced flood events and reducing solids retention performance. READ MORE
