1. Modeling and Control of the Paper Machine Drying Section
Abstract : The topic of this thesis is modeling and control of the last part of the paper machine - the drying section. Paper is dried by letting it pass through a series of steam heated cylinders and the evaporation is thus powered by the latent heat of vaporization of the steam. READ MORE

2. Perceptual Surface Reconstruction
Abstract : How does the brain transform the 2-D light arrays in our eyes into a meaningful 3-D description of surfaces around us? What assumptions does the visual system make about the world when information is incomplete? And how are these assumptions computationally expressed in this perceptual reconstruction process? These questions, and other aspects of binocular depth perception are analysed from a theoretical and computational perspective, as well as through empirical investigations. In paper one, the fundamentals of stereopsis are briefly reviewed, and the difficulties related with resolving the (stereo) correspondence problem are particularly discussed. READ MORE

3. Minimum-time sliding mode control of robot manipulators
Abstract : Robot manipulators have a complex and highly nonlinear dynamics, accompanied with a high degree of uncertainty. These properties make them difficult for time-optimal control. The theory of sliding mode control can provide methods, able to cope with the uncertainty and nonlinearity in the system. READ MORE

4. Relative Information Based Distributed Control for Intrinsic Formations of Reduced Attitudes
Abstract : This dissertation concerns the formation problems for multiple reduced attitudes, which are extensively utilized in many pointing applications and under-actuated scenarios for attitude maneuvers. In contrast to most existing methodologies on formation control, the proposed method does not need to contain any formation errors in the protocol. READ MORE

5. From Macro to Nano : Electrokinetic Transport and Surface Control
Abstract : Today, the growing and aging population, and the rise of new global threats on human health puts an increasing demand on the healthcare system and calls for preventive actions. To make existing medical treatments more efficient and widely accessible and to prevent the emergence of new threats such as drug-resistant bacteria, improved diagnostic technologies are needed.
