1. Electron-lattice dynamics in π-conjugated systems
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis concerns the dynamics in π-conjugated hydrocarbon systems. Due to the molecular bonding structure of these systems there exists a coupling between the electronic system and the phonons of the lattice. READ MORE

2. Functional Oxide Materials exhibiting Ionic Conductivity for Future Energy Conversion Needs
Abstract : Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that transform the chemical energy in hydrogen and oxygen into electrical energy at high efficiencies and produce only water vapour emissions. Materials with the perovskite or fluorite structure types are commonly employed as the ion conducting ceramic electrolyte membranes in intermediate and high temperature fuel cells. READ MORE

3. Effects of Energetic Disorder on the Optoelectronic Properties of Organic Solar Cells
Abstract : Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) is a promising low-cost and environmental-friendly technology currently achieving 12-14% power conversion efficiency. Despite the extensive focus of the research community over the last years, critical mechanisms defining the performance of OPVs are still topics of debate. READ MORE

4. Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome : a disorder of cholesterol synthesis : diagnosis, treatment and pathogenetic aspects
Abstract : In 1993 it was first suggested that the Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS), described almost 30 years earlier as a malformation syndrome, is caused by defective synthesis of cholesterol. Hypocholesterolaemia and accumulation of the immediate precursor 7-dehydrocholesterol was consistent with deficient activity of the enzyme in the last step of the synthesis, 7-dehydrocholesterol-7-reductase. 5. Cardiovascular and metabolic effects of endothelins in man : an experimental and clinical study
Abstract : Increased plasma concentrations of endothelin-1 (ET-1) and of its propeptide big endothelin-1 have been reported in diseases associated with endothelial dysfunction, cardiovascular remodelling and insulin resistance. In this thesis, we studied the hemodynamic effects of big ET-1 in healthy humans focusing on the mechanisms of the effects (study I-IV). READ MORE
