1. Surface Reactivity and Electronic Structure of Metal Oxides
Abstract : The foci of this thesis are the metal oxides Cu2O, ZnO and Fe3O4 and their interaction with water and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The intention is to study SO2-induced atmospheric corrosion on a molecular level. All studies are based on photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements. 2. The initial atmospheric corrosion of copper and zinc induced by carboxylic acids : Quantitative in situ analysis and computer simulations
Abstract : Degradation of metals through atmospheric corrosion is a most important and costly phenomenon with significant effects on, e.g., the lifespan of industrial materials, the reliability of electronic components and military equipment, and the aesthetic appearance of our cultural heritage. 3. In-situ Studies of Spontaneous Potential Oscillations during Electrochemical Deposition of Copper and Cuprous Oxide
Abstract : Self-oscillating behaviour in alkaline Cu(II)-lactate and -tartrate systems has been investigated by in-situ pH and confocal Raman spectroscopy measurements. Formation of Cu(II)-lactate and -tartrate complexes is a key factor underlying the self-oscillations. READ MORE

4. Quantitative in situ analysis of initial atmospheric corrosion of copper induced by carboxylic acids
Abstract : The interaction of carboxylic acids with copper is a phenomenon found both outdoors and, more commonly, indoors. The influence on copper of some carboxylic acids (formic, acetic, propionic, and butyric) have so far been studied at concentrations levels at least three or four orders of magnitude higher than actual indoor conditions (< 20 ppb, volume parts per billion), and with only limited emphasis on any mechanistic approach.
