  1. 1. Surface Reactivity and Electronic Structure of Metal Oxides

    Author : Anneli Önsten; Ulf Karlsson; Anne Borg; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; oxides; surfaces; defects; cuprous oxide; zinc oxide; magnetite; water; OH; sulfur dioxide; photoelectron spectroscopy; scanning tunneling microscopy; Material physics with surface physics; Materialfysik med ytfysik;

    Abstract : The foci of this thesis are the metal oxides Cu2O, ZnO and Fe3O4 and their interaction with water and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The intention is to study SO2-induced atmospheric corrosion on a molecular level. All studies are based on photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements. 2. 2. The initial atmospheric corrosion of copper and zinc induced by carboxylic acids : Quantitative in situ analysis and computer simulations

    Author : Harveth Gil; Christofer Leygraf; Johan Tidblad; Stuart Lyon; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Atmospheric corrosion; copper; zinc; carboxylic acids; modeling; GILDES; in situ; quantification;

    Abstract : Degradation of metals through atmospheric corrosion is a most important and costly phenomenon with significant effects on, e.g., the lifespan of industrial materials, the reliability of electronic components and military equipment, and the aesthetic appearance of our cultural heritage. 3. 3. In-situ Studies of Spontaneous Potential Oscillations during Electrochemical Deposition of Copper and Cuprous Oxide

    Author : Sofia Leopold; Jay Switzer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Inorganic chemistry; Spontaneous potential oscillations; electrochemical deposition; in-situ pH measurement; in-situ confocal Raman measurement; copper and cuprous oxide; Oorganisk kemi; Inorganic chemistry; Oorganisk kemi; Inorganic Chemistry; oorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : Self-oscillating behaviour in alkaline Cu(II)-lactate and -tartrate systems has been investigated by in-situ pH and confocal Raman spectroscopy measurements. Formation of Cu(II)-lactate and -tartrate complexes is a key factor underlying the self-oscillations. READ MORE

  4. 4. Quantitative in situ analysis of initial atmospheric corrosion of copper induced by carboxylic acids

    Author : Harveth Gil; Christofer Leygraf; Mark Rutland; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Atmospheric corrosion; carboxylic acids; copper; in situ; IRAS; QCM; coulometric reduction.; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : The interaction of carboxylic acids with copper is a phenomenon found both outdoors and, more commonly, indoors. The influence on copper of some carboxylic acids (formic, acetic, propionic, and butyric) have so far been studied at concentrations levels at least three or four orders of magnitude higher than actual indoor conditions (< 20 ppb, volume parts per billion), and with only limited emphasis on any mechanistic approach.
