  1. 1. Adsorption, aggregation and phase separation in colloidal systems

    Author : Jing Dai; Istvan Furo; Peter Griffiths; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NMR; chemical shift; spin relaxation; self-diffusion; micelle; core freezing; segregation; solubilization; release; adsorption; binding; surfactant; carbon nanotube; block copolymer; dispersion; competitive adsorption; nanocomposite; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The thesis presents work regarding amphiphilic molecules associated in aqueous solution or at the liquid/solid interface. Two main topics are included: the temperature-dependent behavior of micelles and the adsorption of dispersants on carbon nanotube (CNT) surfaces. READ MORE

  2. 2. Subsurface fluxes of mass and energy at the accumulation zone of Lomonosovfonna ice cap, Svalbard

    Author : Sergey Marchenko; Veijo Pohjola; Rickard Pettersson; Carleen Reijmer; Thomas Schuler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glacier; ice sheet; sea level; runoff; ice; firn; snow; stratigraphy; density; core; radar; thermistor; temperature; preferential water flow; thermal conductivity; water content; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot naturgeografi; Earth Science with specialization in Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Glaciers cover ca 10% of the Earth's land and are found in the high altitudes and latitudes. They are important components of environmental systems due to the multiple feedbacks linking them with the atmosphere, hydrosphere and periglacial landscapes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Engineered core-shell nanoparticles for biomedical applications

    Author : Carmen Mihaela Vogt; Mamoun Muhammed; Alfonso Garcia-Bennett; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Functional materials; Funktionella material;

    Abstract : The necessity for synthesis of nanoparticles with well controlled size and morphology emerged with the development in recent years of novel advanced applications especially in biomedical related fields. These applications require nanoparticles with more complex architecture such as multifunctional nanoparticles (i.e. READ MORE

  4. 4. Quaternary paleoceanography of the Arctic Ocean : A study of sediment stratigraphy and physical properties

    Author : Emma Sellén; Martin Jakobsson; Jan Backman; Dorthe Klitgaard-Kristensen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic Ocean; sedimentology; Quaternary; stratigraphy; physical properties; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Quaternary geology; Kvartärgeologi; Sedimentology; Sedimentologi; Marine Geoscience; marin geovetenskap;

    Abstract : A Quaternary perspective on the paleoceanographic evolution of the central Arctic Ocean has been obtained in this PhD thesis by studying sediment cores from all of the Arctic’s major submarine ridges and plateaus. The included cores were mainly recovered during the Healy-Oden Trans-Arctic expedition in 2005 and the Lomonosov Ridge off Greenland expedition in 2007. READ MORE

  5. 5. Mechanisms for the Influence from Ice Nucleus Aerosols on Clouds and their Indirect Effects: Cloud Modelling

    Author : Deepak Waman; MERGE: ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; clouds; Radiation; Ice Nuclei; Primary Biological Aerosol Particles; Ice particles; Secondary ice; primary ice; Aerosol particles; thunderstorm;

    Abstract : The role of multiple groups of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) as ice nucleating particles (INPs), and of ice formation processes such as time-dependent freezing of various INPs, and various secondary ice production(SIP) mechanisms in overall ice concentration has been evaluated in a range of cloud systems by simulating them numerically with the state-of-the-art ‘Aerosol-Cloud’ (AC) model in a 3D mesoscale domain. Also, the mechanismsof aerosol indirect effects (AIEs) arising from anthropogenic INPs, and the responses to these AIEs from time-dependent INP freezing and SIP processes are investigated in the simulated clouds.
