21. Simulation of individual cells in flow
Abstract : In this thesis, simulations are performed to study the motion ofindividual cells in flow, focusing on the hydrodynamics of actively swimming cells likethe self-propelling microorganisms, and of passively advected objects like the red bloodcells. In particular, we develop numerical tools to address the locomotion ofmicroswimmers in viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries, as well as the motion ofdeformable capsules in micro-fluidic flows. 22. An Experimental and Numerical Study of the Heat Flow in the Blast Furnace Hearth
Abstract : This study has focused on determining the heat flows in a production blast furnace hearth. This part of the blast furnace is exposed to high temperatures. In order to increase the campaign length of the lining an improved knowledge of heat flows are necessary. Thus, it has been studied both experimentally and numerically by heat transfer modeling. 23. Cut isogeometric methods on trimmed multipatch surfaces
Abstract : Partial differential equations (PDE) on surfaces appear in a variety of applications, such as image processing, modeling of lubrication, fluid flows, diffusion, and transport of surfactants. In some applications, surfaces are drawn and modeled by using CAD software, giving a very precise patchwise parametric description of the surface. READ MORE

24. Stability of tailings dams : focus on numerical modelling
Abstract : Upstream tailings dams may experience slope stability problems when the rate of raising is too fast. Tailings consolidate slowly due to low hydraulic conductivity. The excess pore pressures can build up due to accelerated rate of raising. READ MORE

25. Fracture mechanics studies of non-yielding materials like concrete : modelling of tensile fracture and applied strength analyses
Abstract : Fracture mechanics studies of non-yielding materials are presented. The studies are based on theoretical models for the macroscopical mechanical behaviour of materials during tensile stress induced fracture. A number of applied numercal analysis are indicated. READ MORE
