  1. 16. Untangling Cortico-Striatal Circuitry and its Role in Health and Disease - A computational investigation

    Author : Jovana Belic; Jeanette Hellgren Kotaleski; Arvind Kumar; Abigail Morrison; Arthur Leblois; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cortico-striatal circuits; levodopa-induced dyskinesia; Parkinson’s disease; effective connectivity; cross-frequency coupling; corticostriatal network; network oscillations; GABAergic transmission. basal ganglia; striatum; cortex; fast spiking interneurons; medium spiny neurons; neuronal avalanches;

    Abstract : The basal ganglia (BG) play a critical role in a variety of regular motor and cognitive functions. Many brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s diseases, Huntington’s disease and dyskinesia, are directly related to malfunctions of the BG nuclei. READ MORE

  2. 17. NOTUM and RSPO3 in Bone - WNT signaling modulators regulating the skeleton

    Author : Karin H. Nilsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NOTUM; RSPO3; WNT signaling; Bone;

    Abstract : Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease affecting millions of people worldwide, often leading to fragility fractures and a decreased quality of life. There is an unmet medical need for new anabolic, bone building, treatments. READ MORE

  3. 18. Oscillations and spike statistics in biophysical attractor networks

    Author : Mikael Lundqvist; Anders Lansner; Arvind Kumar; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Attractor networks; computational neuroscience; cortex; datalogi; Computer Science;

    Abstract : The work of this thesis concerns how cortical memories are stored and retrieved. In particular, large-scale simulations are used to investigate the extent to which associative attractor theory is compliant with known physiology and in vivo dynamics. READ MORE

  4. 19. Molecular basis for the anti-inflammatory properties of chlomethiazole

    Author : Anastasia Simi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Stroke; neuroprotection; p38 MAP kinase; chlomethiazole; interleukin-1; c-fos; inflammation; glia; lipopolysaccharide; molecular mechanisms; ischaemia;

    Abstract : Chlomethiazole (CMZ) exerts neuroprotective effects in animal models of stroke, and its clinical efficacy is currently evaluated in acute stroke patients. CMZ also protects the liver from alcohol- induced oxidative damage by inhibiting the cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), as well as inflammation associated with alcohol liver disease (ALD) by inhibiting cytokine expression. 5. 20. Intracellular components involved in parathyroid sensing of extracellular calcium

    Author : Isaac G. Onyango; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Parathyroid hormone; secretion; Src kinase; ERK; PI 3-kinase; PKC; extracellular calcium; parathyroid cell; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Medical and Physiological Chemistry; medicinsk och fysiologisk kemi;

    Abstract : Parathyroid glands are the primary regulator of extracellular calcium ([Ca2+]e). Ca2+ plays a key role in many fundamental biological processes and is also an essential structural component of the skeleton. The parathyroid chief cells detect small changes in [Ca2+]e and respond by altering the secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). READ MORE
