  1. 1. Regimented language training : Changes to brain and behaviour following intensive non-native language learning

    Author : Johan Mårtensson; Institutionen för psykologi; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Cortical thickness; Hippocampus; Plasticity; Language acquisition; Associative memory; Transfer; Education;

    Abstract : The influence of foreign-language acquisition on adult brain structure remains mostly unexplored. Whilst several cross-sectional studies have led to further understanding of how language can affect brain structure, only a few longitudinal studies have been conducted. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cognitive and neural mechanisms of inflectional morphology processing : Studies of native speakers and second language learners of Swedish

    Author : Andrea Schremm; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; morphology; inflection; linguistic tone; ERP; cortical thickness; oscillatory phase synchrony; left anterior negativity; second language acquisition; response times; implicit learning; computer assisted learning;

    Abstract : The present dissertation investigates inflectional morphology processing in native speakers and second language (L2) learners of Swedish. Results of Study 1 suggest that two separate neural mechanisms might be available for native comprehension of inflected words, as reflected in event-related brain potentials obtained for visually presented verb forms. 3. 3. Defense-related inhibition of sympathetic nerve activity: Insights from neuroimaging and monozygotic twins on related cortical processes and clinical potential

    Author : John Jonsson Eskelin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; microneurography; MEG; EEG; MRI; blood pressure; defence reaction; cortical autonomic network;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates a physiological phenomenon observed in the peripheral sympathetic nervous system in response to various stressors and tries to bring it closer to clinical research. Sudden surprising stimulation can evoke a transient inhibition of sympathetic nerve activity to blood vessels in the human body which is also predictive of the blood pressure response. READ MORE

  4. 4. Brain anatomical correlates of perceptual phonological proficiency and language learning aptitude

    Author : Mikael Novén; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prosody; word accent; MRI; language learning aptitude; cortical morphometry; diffusion kurtosis imaging;

    Abstract : The present dissertation concerns how brain tissue properties reflect proficiency in two aspects of language use: the ability to use tonal cues on word stems to predict how words will end and the aptitude for learning foreign languages. While it is known that people differ in their language abilities and that damage to brain tissue cause loss of cognitive functions, it is largely unknown if differences in language proficiencies correlate with differences in brain structure. 5. 5. NOTUM and RSPO3 in Bone - WNT signaling modulators regulating the skeleton

    Author : Karin H. Nilsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NOTUM; RSPO3; WNT signaling; Bone;

    Abstract : Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease affecting millions of people worldwide, often leading to fragility fractures and a decreased quality of life. There is an unmet medical need for new anabolic, bone building, treatments. READ MORE
