  1. 1. Endocrine studies in stroke patients

    Author : Tommy Olsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cerebrovascular disorders; elderly; pituitary gland; thyroid gland; adrenal glands; hydrocortisone; dexamethasone suppression test; cortisol excretion; diabetes mellitus; prognosis;

    Abstract : There are a number of links between the endocrine system and the nervous system. In this study, the impact of ischemic stroke on the endocrine system was investigated. Elderly volunteers were studied because data regarding the influence of advanced age on endocrine parameters were lacking. READ MORE

  2. 2. Stress system function in abdominal obesity. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system in middle-aged men

    Author : Thomas Ljung; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Abdominal obesity; stress; HPA axis; cortisol; glucocorticoid receptors; sympathetic nervous system; catecholamines; depression; SSRI;

    Abstract : Background: There is a strong relationship between central (abdominal, visceral) obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and elevated blood pressure. These abnormalities are included in the term Metabolic Syndrome, and indicate an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes type 2. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hormones and fluid balance during pregnancy, labor and post partum

    Author : Anitha Risberg; Mats Sjöquist; Kerstin Olsson; Sven Lyrenäs; Karolina Kublickiene; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : cortisol; estradiol; glucose; labour; osmolality; oxytocin; parturition; pregnancy; pregnancy-induced hypertension; progesterone; vasopressin; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to determine any association between plasma oxytocin and vasopressin concentrations and renal water and sodium excretion during normal pregnancy. In addition to investigate changes in concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, oxytocin, cortisol, and glucose in the blood before and in the nearest hours after delivery and if treatment with oxytocin affected these concentrations and the fluid balance during the different stages of labour. 4. 4. Clinical Studies in the Acute Phase of Subarachnoid Haemorrhage

    Author : Maria Zetterling; Elisabeth Ronne Engström; Ola Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Subarachnoid haemorrhage; microdialysis; brain energy metabolism; brain glucose; pyruvate; amino acids; cerebral oedema; ACTH; cortisol; Neurosurgery; Neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery; Neurokirurgi;

    Abstract : Patients admitted in similar clinical condition after spontaneous SAH can develop very different clinical courses. This could depend on the severity of the initial global ischemic brain injury at ictus. READ MORE

  5. 5. Metabolic and Endocrine Response in the Acute Stage of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

    Author : Christoffer Nyberg; Elisabeth Ronne Engström; Torbjörn Karlsson; Lars Hillered; Silvana Naredi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Subarachnoid hemorrhage; Energy Expenditure; BNP; Animal Model; Cortisol; Microdialysis; Neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : The rupture of an aneurysm in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a dramatic event causing a severe impact on the brain and a transient or permanent ischemic condition. Several types of responses to meet the challenges of SAH have been found in the acute phase, including activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system, elevated levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and disturbances in cerebral and systemic metabolism.
