  1. 11. Modelling of drug-effect on time-varying biomarkers

    Author : Felix Held; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : Model-based quantification of drug effect is an efficient tool during pre-clinical and clinical phases of drug trials. Mathematical modelling can lead to improved understanding of the underlying biological mechanisms, help in finding shortcomings of experimental design and suggest improvements, or be an effective tool in simulation-based analyses. 2. 12. Psychobiological functioning in mid-adolescent girls and boys : Linkages to self reported stress, self-esteem and recurrent pain

    Author : Lisa Folkesson Hellstadius; Petra Lindfors; Laura Ferrer-Wreder; Roger Persson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Adolescents; Cortisol; Alpha-amylase; Stress; Self-esteem; Recurrent pain; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Among adolescents, the day-to-day functioning of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal-axis (HPA-axis) and of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and their relationships with stress, subjective health complaints and psychological factors such as self-esteem, studied in naturalistic settings, have been largely unexplored. This thesis aimed to investigate the diurnal activity of the HPA-axis (Studies I & II) in terms of salivary cortisol and the ANS/SNS system (Study III) in terms of salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) in mid-adolescent girls and boys. 3. 13. Dietary L-Tryptophan Suppresses Aggression and Stress Responsiveness in Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) : The Role of Brain Serotonin and Plasma Melatonin

    Author : Olivier Lepage; Svante Winberg; József Haller; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; serotonin; brain; fish; rainbow trout; Oncorhynchus mykiss; feed; stress; cortisol; melatonin; behaviour; aggression; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed L-tryptophan (TRP) supplemented feed for 7 days show a suppression of aggressive behaviour along with a reduction in post-stress plasma cortisol levels. However, 3 days of elevated dietary TRP does not have any effects on either aggressive behaviour or post-stress plasma cortisol levels. READ MORE

  4. 14. Adipose tissue as an active organ : blood flow regulation and tissue-specific glucocorticoid metabolism

    Abstract : Background: Despite advances in the treatment of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. With the population getting older and more obese, the burden of cardiovascular disease may further increase. READ MORE

  5. 15. Hormonal programming and adrenal function. Studies in children and in a rat model

    Author : Jovanna Dahlgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Children; cortisol; dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate; small for gestational age; short stature; cytokines; dexamethasone; insulin sensitivity; androgenization;

    Abstract : Prenatal events during specific time windows have been found to be followed by permanent changes affecting neuroendocrine, so called programming. Undernutrition, placental dysfunction or maternal stress, are apparent examples of such stimuli. READ MORE
