    Abstract : Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most commonly used classes of drugs. They target the cyclooxygenases (COX) 1 and 2 to reduce the physiological responses of pain, fever, and inflammation. Due to their role in inducing angiogenesis, COX proteins have also been identified as targets in cancer therapies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Bioassay Development for Identification of Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitors of Natural Origin

    Author : Therese Ringbom; Angelika Vollmar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; farmakognosi;

    Abstract : To examine cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitory effects of natural compounds and structurally related compounds, a radiochemical assay for measuring inhibition of COX-2 and COX-1 catalysed prostaglandin biosynthesis was optimised. That process resulted in the development of a reliable assay for finding COX-2 inhibitors in plants, and for investigating plant constituents pertaining to the inhibition of COX-2 and COX-1. 5. 5. mPGES-1 and the PGE2 pathway in arthritis

    Author : Marie Westman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Prostaglandins; mPGES-1; PGES2; cyclooxygenase; rheumatoid arthritis; collagen induced arthritis; antirheumatic treatments; inflammation; synovial tissue; steroids; TNF blockade;

    Abstract : Prostaglandins are a group of lipid mediators derived from essential fatty acids that act on cells in close proximity of their synthesis. Prostaglandins are produced in a cell specific manner by a variety of cells in response to physiological or pathological stimulation. READ MORE
