  1. 6. Regulation of hematopoiesis in the freshwater crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus : role of transglutaminase

    Author : Kingkamon Junkunlo; Irene Söderhäll; Kenneth Söderhäll; Chadanat Noonin; Mats W Johansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ast1; clotting protein; crayfish; hematopoiesis; PVF PVR; ROS; transglutaminase; Biology with specialization in Molecular Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylärbiologi; Biology with specialization in Comparative Physiology; Biologi med inriktning mot jämförande fysiologi;

    Abstract : The freshwater crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, has been used as a model for studying hematopoiesis or blood cell production or hematopoiesis and immunity. The work of this thesis aims to investigate the impact of factors such as ROS signaling, Ast1, and the PVF/PVR signaling pathway in controlling stem cell behavior during hematopoiesis and specifically the role of the crosslinking enzyme transglutaminase (TGase) in regulation of hematopoiesis. 2. 7. The effects of crayfish on interactions in freshwater benthic communities

    Author : Per Nyström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; exotic species; trophic cascades; omnivory; crayfish; Trophic interactions; freshwater; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines how freshwater crayfish affect community interactions in benthic food webs. I have mainly studied the influence of the introduced signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) on littoral communities, but also the influence of the native noble crayfish (Astacus astacus). 3. 8. Initiation of Innate Immune Responses in the Freshwater Crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus

    Author : Lee So Young; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; pattern recognition protein; innate immunity; crayfish; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; fysiologisk mykologi; Physiological Mycology;

    Abstract : Prophenoloxidase (proPO) is a key enzyme for generation of melanin and is activated by the proPO activating enzyme (ppA) to its active form, PO. The active ppA was purified and cloned from crayfish hemocytes and it is a typical serine proteinase containing a clip, a proline-rich, and a glycine-rich domain. READ MORE

  4. 9. Functional Studies of Some Immune Relevant Genes in a Crustacean

    Author : Haipeng Liu; Kenneth Söderhäll; Irene Söderhäll; Lage Cerenius; Ingrid Faye; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; anti-LPS factor; crayfish; hemocyte; innate immunity; melanization; phenoloxidase; RNA interference; WSSV; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : The freshwater crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, mounts a strong innate immune response against microbes such as viruses and bacteria. In this thesis, a novel RNA interference (RNAi) method mediated with histone H2A was developed and applied in crayfish hematopoietic tissue cell cultures for gene functional studies. READ MORE

  5. 10. Persistent organic pollutants in benthic foodwebs

    Author : Niklas Holmqvist; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; limnologi; Marinbiologi; limnology; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Ekologi; Ecology; Intraspecific interactions; streams; nutrients; lakes; crayfish; eels; Persistent organic pollutants; Benthic foodwebs; akvatisk ekologi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in aquatic biota are dependent on several factors both on individual and on system level. Bioaccumulation of POPs in pelagic biota in lakes as well as fish in streams has been shown to be dependent on nutrient regime of the system. READ MORE
