16. Becoming Biofuels. The messy assembling of resources, sustainability, poverty, land use, and nation-states
Abstract : Biofuels have come to represent the will to mitigate climate change by replacing fossil fuels with so-called climate-friendly and renewable plant sources, and to improve rural and poor conditions in the South through biofuel crop production, farm job creation, and smallholder cash cropping. The expansion of biofuels in countries in the South largely pivoted upon ‘the will to develop’, specifically through the oil shrub Jatropha curcas L. READ MORE

17. Insect-plant interactions within cultivar mixtures : volatile plant communication as an underlying mechanism
Abstract : Promoting genotypic diversity of crops via cultivar mixtures presents a promising strategy to sustainably control insect pests and diseases, and thereby enhance yield. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for reduced pest performance in cultivar mixtures remain unexplored. READ MORE

18. Associations among early-season root and shoot traits, nutrient use efficiency and grain yield of spring wheat
Abstract : Nutrient-efficient and high-yielding spring wheat is needed in high-latitude regions. The aims of this thesis were: (1) to evaluate the effects of soil compaction and differential weather conditions on plant growth and grain yield, (2) to identify critical nutrient elements limiting plant growth and grain yield, and (3) to identify root and shoot traits at an early growth stage (early vigor) influencing nutrient use efficiency and grain yield of spring wheat. 19. Soil Degradation of Raised-beds on Orchards in the Mekong Delta Field and Laboratory Methods
Abstract : Soil degradation is a complex process which may occur anywhere and at any time. It directly affects the physical, chemical and biological processes within the soil profile. Soil degradation can either be as a result of natural hazards or due to manmade actions, such as mismanagement on cropping patterns, soil preparation and cultivation practices. READ MORE

20. Drainage intensity in paddy rice fields : nitrogen flows, salinity, rice yield and greenhouse gas emissions
Abstract : Managing drainage intensity is important in controlling soil moisture and nutrient losses and improving crop yields. This thesis evaluated the effects of drainage intensity on nitrogen losses, salinity and rice grain yield in three cropping seasons, and on gaseous emissions of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from rice flowering to ripening in one season, on a marshland in semiarid region of Rwanda.
