  1. 11. Experimental test setups and simulations in skiing mechanics

    Author : Mikael Swarén; Anders Eriksson; Thomas Stöggl; KTH; []
    Keywords : sports equipment; test methods; sports mechanics; alpine skiing; cross-country skiing; poles; helmets; glide; performance;

    Abstract : Product testing and development are essential parts in sports and for the athletes in their quest to reach the podium. Manufacturers of sports equipment often use basic test methods which do not test the equipment in a sports specific way. READ MORE

  2. 12. Epidemiology of Physical Activity and Fragility Fractures

    Author : Karl Stattin; Liisa Byberg; Jonas Björk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; physical activity; fracture; fragility fracture; epidemiology; cohort study; proteomic; walking; exercise; cross-country skiing; skiing; Vasaloppet.; Epidemiologi; Epidemiology;

    Abstract : Fragility fractures mainly affect elderly individuals and often cause long term pain, loss of function and higher mortality rates. Physical activity improves balance, increases muscle strength and bone mineral density, and may reduce the risk of fragility fractures. READ MORE

  3. 13. The importance of body-mass exponent optimization for evaluation of performance capability in cross-country skiing

    Author : Tomas Carlsson; Michail Tonkonogi; Christer Malm; Klavs Madsen; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allometric scaling; power-function modelling; maximal oxygen uptake; body mass; elite skiers; distance skiing; lactate threshold; double poling; sprint skiing; competition; power output; time trial; Hälsa och välfärd; Health and Welfare;

    Abstract : Introduction Performance in cross-country skiing is influenced by the skier’s ability to continuously produce propelling forces and force magnitude in relation to the net external forces. A surrogate indicator of the “power supply” in cross-country skiing would be a physiological variable that reflects an important performance-related capability, whereas the body mass itself is an indicator of the “power demand” experienced by the skier. 4. 14. Objective Analysis Methods in the Mechanics of Sports

    Author : Mikael Swarén; Anders Eriksson; Vesa Linnamo; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; sports equipment; test methods; sports mechanics; biomechanics; performance analysis; tracking; positioning system; pacing; alpine skiing; cross-country skiing; poles; helmets;

    Abstract : Sports engineering can be considered as the bridge between the knowledge of sports science and the principles of engineering and has an important role not only in improving the athletic performance, but also in increasing the safety of the athletes. Testing and optimization of sports equipment and athletic performance are essential for supporting athletes in their quest to reach the podium. READ MORE

  5. 15. Roller skis' rolling resistance and grip characteristics : influences on physiological and performance measures in cross-country skiers

    Author : Mats Ainegren; Peter Carlsson; Marko Laaksonen; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Adjustable grip; blood lactate; centre of pressure; cycle length; cycle rate; economy; efficiency; friction coefficient; heart rate; normal force; OBLA; oxygen uptake; power; ratcheted wheel; ratings of perceived exertion; roller skis; rolling resistance; tangential force; time to exhaustion;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate roller ski characteristics; classical and freestyle roller skis’ rolling resistance coefficients (μR) and classical style roller skis’ static friction coefficients (μS), and to study the influence of different μR and μS on cross-country skiers’ performance and both physiological and biomechanical indices. The aim was also to study differences in skiing economy and efficiency between recreational skiers, female and male junior and senior elite cross-country skiers. READ MORE
