  2. 2. Gravity Illustrated. Spacetime Edition

    Author : Rickard Jonsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; embeddings; pedagogical techniques; curved spacetime; optical geometry; gyroscope precession; inertial forces;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with essentially four different topics within general relativity: pedagogical techniques for illustrating curved spacetime, inertial forces, gyroscope precession and optical geometry. Concerning the pedagogical techniques, I investigate two distinctly different methods, the dual and the absolute method. READ MORE

  3. 3. Topics in Five Dimensional Supersymmetry and Topological Quantum Field Theories

    Author : Luigi Tizzano; Maxim Zabzine; Anton Kapustin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theories; Topological Quantum Field Theories; String Theory.;

    Abstract : We explore five-dimensional supersymmetric quantum field theories and topological quantum field theories. In five dimensions, we describe a framework to consistently define a supersymmetric theory on a curved spacetime manifold. READ MORE

  4. 4. Attraction and Rejection : On the love–hate relationship between stars and black holes

    Author : Emanuel Gafton; Stephan Rosswog; Tamara Bogdanović; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Solitary stars wandering too close to the supermassive black hole at the centre of their galaxy may become tidally disrupted, if the tidal forces due to the black hole overcome the self-gravity holding the star together. Depending on the strength of the encounter, the star may be partially disrupted, resulting in a surviving stellar core and two tidal arms, or may be completely disrupted, resulting in a long and thin tidal stream expected to fall back and circularize into an accretion disc (the two cases are illustrated on the cover of this thesis).
