  2. 2. Nerve-induced release of nitric oxide in gastrointestinal and erectile tissue

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Department of Surgical Science

    Author : Katarina Hallén; Karolinska Institutet.; Karolinska Institutet.; [2004]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Autonomic neurotransmission; cyclic guanosine monophosphate; guinea pig colon; neuronal nitric oxide synthase; nitric oxide; nitrite; phosphodiesterase; rabbit corpus cavernosum; smooth muscle; soluble guanylate cyclase;

    Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is an important messenger of the autonomic nervous system, innervating the gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts among many other tissues. The aim of the present thesis was to study the nitrergic neurotransmission in enteric and erectile tissue with special emphasis on modulation of nitrergic neurotransmission by the soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC)/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-pathway. 3. 3. Endothelium-derived Vasoactive Factors and Leukocyte-derived Inflammatory Mediators. Studies in subjects with or at risk for vascular disease

    University dissertation from Wallenberg Lab. Plan 2,University Hospital , Malmö, S-20502, Malmö, SWEDEN. After 1999-07-10 new address, P.O. Box 1042, Benghazi, Libya

    Author : Anwaar M Ibrahim; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [1999]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostacyclin.; Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy; Nitric oxide; Endothelin; Diabetes mellitus; Cytokines; Cholesterol; Atherosclerosis; Cerebral ischemia; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet;

    Abstract : This study was undertaken to evaluate relationships between endothelial function (assessed as mediators of endothelium-derived vasoactive factors such as nitric oxide [NO], prostacyclin [PGI2] and endothelin [ET-1] ), and risk factors for atherosclerosis, as well as to study possible relationships between endothelial function and leukocyte activation (indicated by measurements of leukocyte-derived inflammatory mediators) in subjects with or at risk for atherosclerosis. In subjects with asymptomatic atherosclerosis we found inverse relationships between cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in platelets (mediator of NO activity) and both serum total cholesterol and plasma ET-1 suggesting that NO-mediated vasodilation may be impaired in hypercholesterolemia and that maintenance of vascular tone is achieved by a balance between NO and ET-1. 4. 4. Health hazards associated with dissemination of bacterial strains in waste water recycling

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Microbiology and Tumor Biology Center (MTC)

    Author : Mokhlasur Rahman; Karolinska Institutet.; Karolinska Institutet.; [2005]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Treated waste effluents with low levels of chemical and microbiological contents are used for domestic, industrial, agricultural and aquacultural purposes worldwide, and it is estimated that one tenth or more of the world’s population consume food produced through irrigation with wastewater. Treated hospital waste effluents may contain pathogenic and drug resistant bacteria, which constitutes the most dangerous single risk factor for dissemination of pathogenic and drug resistant organisms to the environment. 5. 5. Nitrite Ion : Its role in vasoregulation and host defenses

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology

    Author : Håkan Björne; Karolinska Institutet.; Karolinska Institutet.; [2005]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Nitrate; nitrite; nitric oxide; gastro protection; ventilator-associated pneumonia; bactericidal; vasodilation;

    Abstract : Nitrite and nitrate are distributed throughout the human body, with especially high levels being present in saliva. Until recently, these anions were considered merely to be inert end-products of the oxidation of endogenous nitric oxide (NO). READ MORE
