6. Bacterial Resistance to Antimicrobial Peptides : Rates, Mechanisms and Fitness Effects
Abstract : The rapid emergence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has necessitated the development of alternative treatment strategies. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are important immune system components that kill microbes rapidly and have broad activity-spectra, making them promising leads for new pharmaceuticals. READ MORE

7. The calcitonin gene family of peptides : receptor expression and effects on bone cells
Abstract : The calcitonin gene family of peptides consists of calcitonin (CT), two calcitonin gene related peptides (α-CGRP, β-CGRP), adrenomedullin (ADM), amylin (AMY), three calcitonin receptor activating peptides (CRSP1-3) and intermedin/adrenomedullin2 (IMD). These peptides bind to one of two G protein -coupled receptors, the calcitonin receptor (CTR) or the calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CRLR). READ MORE

8. The solution conformations of macrocycles. Applications in the exploration of weak interactions and in drug development
Abstract : Understanding the solution conformation and dynamics of molecules with biological relevance, as well as the impact of their conformation stabilizing weak interactions, is for example important for drug design. Macrocycles have attractive pharmaceutical properties, and are of special interest as drug leads for targets with large, flat and featureless binding sites like protein-protein interfaces. READ MORE

9. Methodological studies in solid phase synthesis : Linkers and applications of multi-component condensations
Abstract : Solid phase synthesis has become an increasingly important tool in the synthesis of oligopolymers and small organic molecules. This thesis covers three important areas in the solid phase synthesis technique: linker strategies, reduction methods and novel routes to complex heterocycles. READ MORE

10. Electrifying the Molecules of Life : Peptide and Protein Analysis by Capillary Electrophoresis Coupled to Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry
Abstract : This thesis describes the current status and novel aspects of the analysis of the molecules of life, i.e. peptides and proteins, using capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) via (sheathless) electrospray ionization (ESI). Early reports of sheathless CE-ESI-MS were plagued by limited lifetimes of the electrospray emitter. READ MORE
