  1. 1. Hypothalamic and cortical control of jaw reflexes

    Author : Kurt Å. Olsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cat; Oral projections; Cerebral cortex; Cytoarchitecture; Hypothalamus; Defence-Attack area; Jaw reflexes; Bruxism; Myofascial pain dysfunction;

    Abstract : The subject of the thesis is a study of the projections from low threshold oral and face afferents to the cerebral cortex and of descending motor control mechanisms originating in the cerebral cortex or the hypothalamus and influencing the jaw reflexes.Cats anaesthetized with chi oral ose were used for the experiments. 2. 2. Cervicothalamic tract termination and its cortical connections: anatomical studies in cats and ferrets

    Author : Mengliang Zhang; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; Neurology; Carnivora; Cytoarchitecture; Immunocytochemistry; Compartmentation; Retrograde transport; Anterograde transport; Somatosensory cortex; Thalamus; Spinal cord; Lateral cervical nucleus; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : The termination and cortical connections of the cervicothalamic tract (CTT) were studied by neuroanatomical tract tracing techniques in cats and ferrets. After injections of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate or biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) into the cat lateral cervical nucleus (LCN), the most abundant CTT termination is present in the ventral posterior lateral nucleus (VPL). 3. 3. On mapping the human somatosensory cortex : fMRI and PET imaging

    Author : Jeremy Young; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Mapping; anatomy; connectivity; somatosensory; attention; organisation; somatotopy; fMRI; PET; rCBF; cytoarchitecture.;

    Abstract : This work is based on experiments and simulations for the purpose of mapping the human somatosensory cortex. By using a combination of structural mapping (cytoarchitecture), connectivity mapping, functional mapping, and somatotopical mapping an overview of the organisation of the human somatosensory cortex at different levels is possible. 4. 4. Evaluation of surgical methods for sleep apnea and snoring

    Author : Thorbjörn Holmlund; Diana Berggren; Eva Levring Jäghagen; Karl Franklin; Sören Berg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sleep apnea syndromes; adverse effects; mortality; radiofrequency; sham surgery; randomized controlled trial; daytime sleepiness; snoring; tonsillar hypertrophy; tonsillectomy; cytoskeleton; desmin; dystrophin; muscle fiber; palatopharyngeus; soft palate; uvula.; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Abstract : Background: Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are both common disorders with a number of negative health effects. The safety and efficacy of treating snoring and OSA surgically have been questioned and there has been a lack of studies in the field. READ MORE

  5. 5. On the evolutionary origin of the vertebrate cortex

    Author : Shreyas M Suryanarayana; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to dissect out the minimalistic ancestral neural hardware, which has been conserved in homologue structures of the cerebral cortex and in particular the neocortex, across vertebrates. For this purpose, we utilise the lamprey - a cyclostome (jawless vertebrate), and we compare its anatomical homologue of cortex, the lateral pallium (LPal), in terms of its connectivity, cytoarchitecture and sensory organisation with that of the mammalian neocortex.
