1. Intracellular lipids and inflammatory activity in macrophage foam cells
Abstract : Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is characterized by lipid accumulation and inflammation in arteries. The disease starts early in life with migration of monocytes into the arterial wall where they engulf entrapped lipoproteins and become macrophage foam cell. READ MORE

2. Determining the role of guanylate-binding proteins for host defense against Francisella tularensis
Abstract : Francisella tularensis is a highly virulent, intracellular bacterium and the causative agent of the human disease tularemia. This is a zoonotic, often vector-borne disease. Due to its intracellular nature, F. READ MORE

3. Cytokine regulation in rodents with experimental arthritis
Abstract : The general aim of this project has been to try to elucidate the mechanisms behind induction of arthritis by using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical methods to analyse the dynamics of the cytokine network in vivo, in the peripheral Iymphoid system and in the joints of rodents with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA)and oil-induced arthritis (OIA). We first examined the kinetics of cytokine gene expression in vivo, in the draining Iymph nodes of DA rats following immunization with rat type II collagen (RCII) emulsified in Freund's incomplete adjuvant oil (FIA) or with only FIA, which are regimens that induce CIA and OIA, respectively. 4. Detection of apoptosis in patients with coronary artery disease : Assessment of temporal patterns and potential sources
Abstract : The atherosclerotic process and its consequences are considered driven by an imbalance between pro- and ant-inflammatory actions. One contributing factor in this scenario is an altered regulation of apoptosis, which affects both immune, vascular and myocardial cells. READ MORE

5. Cytokine profiles, infections and IgE sensitisation in childhood
Abstract : Background: The etiologic factors behind development of lgE-mediated allergy are incompletely understood although the interaction between allergic heredity and exposure to various environmental factors seems to be most important. Objective: The overall aim of this thesis was to study the associations between allergic heredity, environmental factors like viral infections and lgE sensitisation and the development of allergic diseases during childhood.
