  1. 1. Perinatal brain injury - markers and mediators. Non-protein-bound iron and pro-inflammatory cytokines in newborn infants and neonatal pigs

    Author : Karin Sävman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Asphyxia; hypoxia; posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation; preterm; newborn; perinatal; brain; cerebrospinal fluid; cytokines; IL-1ß; IL-6; IL-8; TNF-a; non-protein-bound-iron;

    Abstract : Two groups of newborn infants have an increased risk for perinatal brain injury; preterm infants and term infants subjected to birth asphyxia. Experimental studies indicate that hypoxic-ischemic insults in the perinatal period initiate a secondary neurotoxic cascade including formation of toxic reactive oxygen species as well as an inflammatory response with elevated levels of potentially neurotoxic cytokines. 2. 2. Molecular Mechanisms of Reward and Aversion

    Author : Anna Klawonn; David Engblom; Anders Blomqvist; Paul Kenny; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Motivation; Dopamine; Reward; Aversion; Negative affect; Systemic Inflammation; Drug Addiction; Cytokines; Prostaglandin E2; Melanocortin receptor 4; Acetylcholine; Muscarinic M4 receptor;

    Abstract : Various molecular pathways in the brain shape our understanding of good and bad, as well as our motivation to seek and avoid such stimuli. This work evolves around how systemic inflammation causes aversion; and why general unpleasant states such as sickness, stress, pain and nausea are encoded by our brain as undesirable; and contrary to these questions, how drugs of abuse can subjugate the motivational neurocircuitry of the brain. 3. 3. Neuropeptides and neurotrophins in arthritis : studies on the human and mouse knee joint

    Author : Ola Grimsholm; Sture Forsgren; Solbritt Rantapää-Dahlqvist; Elvar Theodorsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropeptides; neurotrophins; bombesin gastrin-releasing peptide; substance P; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; synovial tissue; knee joint; rheumatoid arthritis; Anatomy; Anatomi;

    Abstract : Neuropeptides, such as substance P (SP) and bombesin/gastrin-releasing peptide (BN/GRP), and neurotrophins are involved in neuro-immunomodulatory processes and have marked trophic, growth-promoting and inflammation-modulating properties. The impact of these modulators in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is, however, unclear. READ MORE

  4. 4. On inflammatory cytokines and β-amyloid peptides in acute and chronic neurodegeneration

    Author : Roya Tehranian; Gianluigi Forloni; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inflammation; Cytokines; Amyloid; Peptides; Nerve degeneration; Neurochemistry and Neurotoxicology; neurokemi och neurotoxikologi;

    Abstract : Insults to the brain as well as neurodegenerative diseases are known to elicit inflammatory responses. Inflammation in the brain can on one hand initiate processes that are harmful to the injured tissue and exacerbate the damage, leading to neuronal degeneration and glial activation, and on the other hand activate processes that may be necessary for repair mechanisms and regeneration. 5. 5. Role of classical pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators in ischemic stroke. Beyond neuroimmunomodulation

    Author : Ana Inacio; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; interferon-β; inflammatory immune cells; galectin-3; experimental stroke; enriched environment; cytokines; Brain; macrophage migration inhibitory factor; neuroprotection; reactive astrocytes.;

    Abstract : Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term neurological deficits worldwide, and no effective treatment is available for the vast majority of the stroke patients. A rapid and persistent activation of multiple and dynamic inflammatory and immune cascades, in and outside the brain, occurs after stroke. READ MORE
