  1. 11. Fluorescence Studies of Cell Division in Escherichia coli

    Author : Bill Söderström; Gunnar von Heijne; Jie Xiao; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; E. coli; Cell division; FtsZ; Fluorescence microscopy; FRAP; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Abstract : In Escherichia coli the cell division is carried out by a large dynamic protein complex called the divisome. The divisome assembles in a two-step manner starting with the localization of the eukaryotic tubulin homologue FtsZ to the midcell. Together with other early arriving proteins FtsZ form an intermediate structure called the Z-ring. READ MORE

  2. 12. Unique Solutions to Universal Problems : Studies of the Archaeal Cell

    Author : Erik A. Pelve; Rolf Bernander; Sonja Verena Albers; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Archaea; Cdv; Cell cycle; Cell division; Cell lysis; Crenarchaea; ESCRT-III; Flow cytometry; Microarray; Microscopy; Nitrosopumilus; SIRV2; Sulfolobus; Thaumarchaea; Transcription; VAP; Virus; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution;

    Abstract : Archaea is one of the three domains of life and studies of archaeal biology are important for understanding of life in extreme environments, fundamental biogeochemical processes, the origin of life, the eukaryotic cell and their own, unique biology. This thesis presents four studies of the archaeal cell, using the extremophilic Sulfolobus and ocean living Nitrosopumilus as model systems. READ MORE

  3. 13. Links between Aging and Proteostasis Decline in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Veronica Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aging; aggregates; proteostasis; proteasome; disaggregation; peroxiredoxins; asymmetric inheritance; S. cerevisiae;

    Abstract : Proteins are continuously synthesized and degraded to meet the demands of the cell. Hence, a proper balance between synthesis, folding, disaggregation and degradation is of essence to ensure cell survival. Disruption of any part of this proteostasis network may have severe consequences for cellular fitness and longevity. READ MORE

  4. 14. Structural and Functional Studies of Gelsolin Family Proteins

    Author : Qing Ma; Robert Robinson; Roger Karlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Structural biology; Strukturbiologi;

    Abstract : The actin cytoskeleton is a complex structure that performs a wide range of cellular functions including: cell locomotion, cytokinesis, chemotaxis, signal transduction and apoptosis. The coordinated assembly and disassembly of actin filaments is controlled by a multitude of proteins (ABPs) in the cell. READ MORE

  5. 15. Mitotic aberrations in mammalian cells

    Author : Anna Renglin Lindh; Thomas Helleday; Micheline Kirsch-Volders; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aneuploidy; mitotic aberrations; chemical effects; human cancer; DNA repair; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : Almost all cancer cells are aneuploid showing the wrong chromosome number and often with structural aberrations. The degree of aneuploidy correlates with an increase of the severity of the disease and tumour cells with chromosomal instability are more prone to acquire resistance to chemotherapy than other cells.
