1. Long-lasting ecological legacies of reindeer on tundra vegetation
Abstract : Reindeer can have strong effects on the plant species composition and functioning of tundra ecosystems, and often promote a transition towards a graminoid-dominated vegetation type. As a result, they influence many ecological processes, such as nutrient dynamics, soil biotic composition and functioning, and carbon storage. READ MORE

2. Surgery and immuno modulation in Crohn’s disease
Abstract : Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease with unknown origin. This study investigates the combined use of surgery and immuno modulation in Crohn’s disease. The outcome of medication and surgery in 371 operations on 237 patients between 1989 and 2006 were evaluated. READ MORE

3. Optimal Design and Inference for Correlated Bernoulli Variables using a Simplified Cox Model
Abstract : This thesis proposes a simplification of the model for dependent Bernoulli variables presented in Cox and Snell (1989). The simplified model, referred to as the simplified Cox model, is developed for identically distributed and dependent Bernoulli variables. READ MORE

4. Ab Initio Simulations of Transition Metal Alloys: Towards the Multiscale Modeling
Abstract : The present thesis concerns applications of first principles electronic structure calculations in conjunction with methods of statistical mechanics for simulations of transition metal alloys both in the bulk and at surfaces.A fully relativistic generalization of the exact muffin-tin orbitals (EMTO) method has been developed. 5. Nonlinear Interaction Between Ultrasonic Waves and Cracks and Interfaces
Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the development of new ultrasound inspection techniques for detection of cracks that are smaller than the wavelength of the inspecting wave and the characterization of cracks in fluid-filled pipes as either surface-breaking or subsurface. The spectrum of the scattered field of a partially closed crack comprises harmonic components not expected to be found in the case of linear scatterers such as pores or inclusions. READ MORE
