6. Building Physics Tools: Needs, Use and the Lack of Use in the Building Process. Modelling Non-Isothermal Moisture Flow and Frost Penetration
Abstract : Despite advances in material science, computers and building technology, building failures related to building physics continue to occur. These failures range from a building not meeting its energy use target to a building causing people to become ill from exposure to various chemicals or biological organisms. READ MORE

7. Characterization of domain switching and optical damage properties in ferroelectrics
Abstract : Nonlinear optical frequency conversion is one of the most important key techniques in order to obtain lasers with wavelengths targeted for specific applications. In order to realize efficient and tailored lasers, the quasi-phase-matching (QPM) approach using periodically-poled ferroelectric crystals is getting increasingly important. READ MORE

8. Studies of DNA repair strategies in response to complex DNA damages
Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to study the role of the indirect actions of γ-rays and α-particles on the complexity of primary DNA damages and the repair fidelity of major DNA repair pathways: non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), homologous recombination repair (HRR) and base excision repair (BER). The complexity of radiation-induced damages increases and the proximity between damages decreases with increasing LET due to formation of ionization clusters along the particle track. READ MORE

9. An Investigation of the Iron-Ore Wheel Damages using Vehicle Dynamics Simulation
Abstract : Maintenance cost is one of the important issues in railway heavy haul operations. For the iron-ore company LKAB, these costs are mainly associated with the reprofiling and changing of the wheels of the locomotives and wagons. The main reason for the wheel damages is usually surface initiated rolling contact fatigue (RCF) on the wheels. READ MORE

10. Improved road design for future maintenance : analysis of road barrier repair costs
Abstract : The cost of a road construction over its service life is a function of the design, quality of construction, maintenance strategies and maintenance operations. Unfortunately, designers often neglect a very important aspect which is the possibility to perform future maintenance activities. READ MORE
