  1. 1. Light Rhythms : Exploring the Perceptual and Behavioural Effects of Daylight and Artificial Light Conditions in a Scandinavian Context

    Author : Federico Favero; Roberto Bresin; Arne Lowden; Ute Besenecker; Sergio Altomonte; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lighting design; Context; Light; Behaviour; Perception of light; Perception of time; Associative aspects; Architecture; Daylight; Media Technology; Medieteknik;

    Abstract : This compilation thesis collects multidisciplinary work on the study of the impact of light rhythms on perception and behaviour. The thesis was structured to answer and discuss the questions: “How does a person feel and behave inan illuminated space?” and “Do variable light conditions influence perception, appraisal and motion?”. 2. 2. Daylight compliance of multi-dwelling apartment blocks : Design considerations, evaluation criteria and occupant responses

    Author : Iason Bournas; Institutionen för arkitektur och byggd miljö; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; daylight; electric lighting; policy; regulation compliance; simulation; questionnaire; daylight metrics; perception; brightness; user preferences; urban density; block typology; room geometry; room function; room orientation;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the daylight compliance of residential spaces, in particular apartments in multi-dwelling building blocks, and provides knowledge that may prove useful for the development of future daylight criteria for dwellings. The implications of design choices on daylight compliance of spaces and the effect of daylight criteria on the level of compliance are at the core of this work. READ MORE

  3. 3. Performance in the Swedish Building Code : An Inquiry into the Consequences for Architectural Design of the Formulation and Assessment of Performance Requirements

    Author : Marja Lundgren; Timothy Anstey; Fredrik Nilsson; Meike Schalk; Anne Beim; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Architecture; architectural technology; performance-based regulation; performance requirement; energy performance; daylight metrics; tectonics; architectural representation; repertoire; context-dependent knowledge; Arkitektur; funktionskrav; energiprestanda; dagsljusfaktor; tektonik; repertoar; arkitekturteknik; Arkitektur; Architecture;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates performance-based regulation in Sweden and its consequences for architectural design. In the last 50 years, there has been a transition from prescriptive to performance-based regulation, propelled by the drive to further innovation, productivity and competitiveness by expressing the functions expected of the buildings as performances. 4. 4. Daylight Influence on Colour Design : Empirical Study on Perceived Colour and Colour Experience Indoors

    Author : Maud Hårleman; Jadwiga Krupinska; José Luis Caivano; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; architecture; interior colouring; spatial character; natural daylight; verbal description; colour reference box; Architecture; Arkitektur;

    Abstract : It is known that one and the same interior colouring will appear different in rooms with windows facing north or facing south, but it is not known how natural daylight from these two compass points affects perceived colour and the ways in which colour is experienced. The objective is to describe the perceived colours to be expected in rooms with sunlight and diffused light, and thus develop a tool for colour design. READ MORE

  5. 5. Energy Savings by Using Daylight for Basic Urban Shapes : With a Case Study of Three Different Street Types

    Author : Bengt Sundborg; Tigran Haas; Jan Ejhed; Ulf Ranhagen; Barbara Matusiak; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; daylight; energy; climate; urban design principles; urban pattern; street grid; Arkitektur; Architecture;

    Abstract : During winter the sun is in short supply. But research at KTH shows that solar radiation can be facilitated while energy consumption for lighting is reduced. This provided that the buildings are appropriately designed. But, unfortunately, the sunlight is often not taken into account and the results are the opposite. READ MORE
