  1. 1. Toxicologically important DDT metabolites : Synthesis, enantioselective analysis and kinetics

    Author : Tatiana Cantillana; Åke Bergman; Peter Sundin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; o; p -DDD; 3-Methylsulfonyl-DDE; adrenocorticolytic compounds; chiral; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry; miljökemi;

    Abstract : DDT was extensively and globally used as a pesticide in agriculture and for malaria vector control from the 1940’s until the 1970’s. Due to its heavy use, DDT became ubiquitously distributed throughout the environment. DDT and several DDT metabolites are persistent organic pollutants. READ MORE

  2. 2. Structural studies of polychlorinated hydrocarbons : DDT analogues and degradation products

    Author : Sven Hovmöller; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The crystal structures of five analogues and degradation products of DOT have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The conformations of these compounds are discussed and compared with the other DDT-type compounds whose crystal structures have been solved. READ MORE

  3. 3. Persistent organic pollutants in the atmosphere - spatial and temporal variations

    Author : Cecilia Backe; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tropical and temperate regions; global transport; temperature; latitudinal fractionation; fugacity; soil organic matter; soil-air exchange; washout ratio; rain; precipitation; atmosphere; spatial and temporal variations; DDT; PCB; persistent organic pollutants; polychlorinated biphenyls; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Ecology; Ekologi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : In these thesis I have studied the spatial and temporal variations of PCBs in the atmosphere and in precipitation in southern Sweden. Further, soil-air exchange processes of PCBs were investigated. Finally, the long-range transport of PCBs and DDT was studied in the Baltic Sea region and in a tropical vs. a temporal region. Abstract : Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the Baltic Sea suffer from a reproduction disease known as the M74-syndrome. Newly hatched fry develop nerve disorders and die between 3-5 days after the first symptoms are seen. This is a maternally transmitted disease that is casued by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. 5. 5. Assessment of Environmental Pollutants in Humans from Four Continents : Exposure levels in Slovakia, Guinea-Bissau, Nicaragua and Bangladesh

    Author : Linda Linderholm; Åke Bergman; Maria Athanasiadou; Kristina Jakobsson; Myrto Petreas; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; POPs; PCB; DDT; PBDE; HCH; metabolites; human exposure; children s exposure; placental transfer; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry;

    Abstract : Humans are continuously exposed to complex mixtures of anthropogenic chemicals. This thesis focus on human exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). POPs ability to bioaccumulate and biomagnify together with the extensive historical use of POPs in e.g. READ MORE
