1. Trees of Knowledge : Science and the Shape of Genealogy
Abstract : This study investigates early employments of family trees in the modern sciences, in order to historicise their iconic status and now established uses, notably in evolutionary biology and linguistics. Moving beyond disciplinary accounts to consider the wider cultural background, it examines how early uses within the sciences transformed family trees as a format of visual representation, as well as the meanings invested in them. 2. Inferring Land Use from Remote Sensing Imagery : A context-based approach
Abstract : This doctoral thesis investigates the potential of classification methods based on spatial context to infer specific forms of land use from remote sensing data. The problem is that some types of land use are characterized by a complex configuration of land covers that traditional per-pixel based methods have problems classifying due to spectral heterogeneity. 3. Old-Growth Forests in the High Coast Region in Sweden and Active Management in Forest Set-Asides
Abstract : In today´s intensively managed landscape, very few forests with old-growth characteristics and little human impact exist. One of the rare exceptions is pine forests on rocky soils, a forest type which has probably escaped extensive human use because of its low productivity. READ MORE

4. Occurrence patterns of dead wood and wood-dependent lichens in managed boreal forest landscapes
Abstract : Dead wood is a key resource for biodiversity, on which thousands of forest organisms are dependent. Because of current forest management, there has been a large-scale change in dead wood amounts and qualities, and consequently, many wood-dependent species are threatened. READ MORE

5. Forest restoration guided by an umbrella species : will measures to protect the white-backed woodpecker benefit saproxylic beetles?
Abstract : Management shortcuts in conservation biology, like the umbrella species concept, have been debated worldwide. Umbrella species have been used to identify and delineate protective areas, but habitat requirements of umbrella species can also provide tangible targets in ecological restoration. READ MORE
